Chapter 8 - The Perjury Trap Snaps

The large projection screen on the courtroom wall flared to life.

Instead of legal documents, the screen displayed a crystal-clear, high-angle video timestamped three nights prior at 11:24 P.M. The camera angle was positioned from inside Evelyn's private residence, looking directly at her study.

The courtroom watched in absolute silence as the front door of Evelyn’s apartment was opened with a copied master key. Fiona Vance stepped into the frame, glancing nervously over her shoulder. She walked straight to Evelyn’s desk safe, typed in a combination from a crumpled note in her hand, opened the steel door, and pulled out the original blue leather portfolio.

Then, Fiona pulled an identical blue portfolio from her tote bag, slid it inside the safe, and relocked it.

"Oh my God," someone in the gallery whispered.

On Fiona’s live stream, the chat began flying past in a dizzying blur of text: *WAIT SHE PLANTED IT?* — *SHE SET HER UP?!* — *THIS IS ON LIVE TV RIGHT NOW!*

Fiona frantically attempted to tap the screen to terminate the broadcast, but her fingers were trembling so hard she fumbled the phone, and it clattered to the floor, the lens pointing directly up at her horrified, pale face.

"That video was captured via a court-authorized federal surveillance fixture," Evelyn stated calmly from the defense table. "The portfolio Mr. Albright presented to this court this morning does not contain my grandfather's original trust. It contains a forged document manufactured in Mr. Albright’s private office, which my sister planted in my apartment to manufacture probable cause for an unlawful warrant."

Martinez stepped up the pressure. "Your Honor, at 1:47 A.M., Mr. Albright contacted Detective Briggs, using false statements to secure a nighttime warrant. At 2:10 A.M., Harold Vance authorized three fraudulent offshore loans totaling 1.2 million dollars against the Vance estate through Oakhaven Holdings—a known money-laundering conduit controlled by Mr. Albright in Belize."

"That's a lie!" Harold screamed, jumping to his feet. "Marcus told me it was standard bridge financing! He told me it was legal!"

"You signed the contracts, Harold!" Albright snarled, spinning on his client with bared teeth. "You swore under oath ten minutes ago that you were the lawful executor! You begged me to liquidate those accounts before the banks opened!"

"Enough!" Judge Harrison slammed his gavel down three times, the sound ringing like gunshots. "Mr. Albright, you have placed forged instruments before this bench. Mr. Vance, you have committed aggravated perjury on the record."

"Your Honor, please," Beatrice wailed, collapsing onto the mahogany railing in tears. "We are the family! We are his blood! Evelyn was never here! She abandoned us for her career! Arthur loved us—he would never leave us with nothing!"

Evelyn stood up. She looked at her mother not with hatred, but with a profound, chilling pity.

"He knew you better than anyone, Mother," Evelyn said softly. "And he wanted to make sure you heard it from his own mouth."
