Chapter 7 - The Door Opens

The heavy oak doors at the back of Courtroom 402 swung open with a resounding, thunderous crack that silenced every whisper in the room.
Two United States Marshals in tactical dress, their golden badges gleaming on their chest rigs, stepped through the threshold, followed immediately by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Martinez.
And between them walked Evelyn Vance.
She was no longer wearing the casual sweater from the midnight raid. She wore a tailored, charcoal-grey federal suit. Clipped to the breast pocket of her blazer was a gold-and-blue badge reading: *SPECIAL AGENT — UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE*. Around her neck hung a high-security credential bearing the official seal of the Attorney General.
Fiona gasped, her phone dropping several inches before she jerked it back upward. Beatrice let out a muffled squeak, clutching Harold’s arm so violently her fingernails tore through his suit sleeve.
"What is the meaning of this?" Albright sputtered, wheeling around, his smooth composure instantly fracturing. "Your Honor, this woman is a fugitive! She was arrested on felony charges—she should be in a holding cell awaiting arraignment!"
"Sit down, Mr. Albright," Judge Harrison said. The judge's voice held none of the mild curiosity from moments before. It was like iron striking granite.
Evelyn walked down the center aisle, her heels clicking in steady, deliberate rhythm against the hardwood floor. She passed the gallery, passed her trembling parents, and walked directly to the empty defense table, taking her seat.
Daniel Martinez stepped forward to the podium. "Daniel Martinez, Assistant United States Attorney, appearing on behalf of the Department of Justice and Special Agent Evelyn Vance. We are here, Your Honor, to intervene in this proceeding under federal jurisdiction."
"Federal jurisdiction?" Harold shouted, completely losing control of himself. "This is a county matter! She’s my daughter—she’s a criminal! She forged my father’s name!"
"Harold Vance, one more outburst from you and the Marshals will remove you to a holding tank," Judge Harrison warned sharply. He turned to Martinez. "Mr. Martinez, does the Government have evidence pertinent to this emergency petition?"
"We do, Your Honor," Martinez said, pulling a black drive from his folder and handing it to the court clerk. "The Department of Justice has been conducting an eighteen-month undercover racketeering investigation into Marcus Albright and his criminal associates. We are prepared to enter into the record certified federal wiretaps, surveillance transcripts, and bank tracking logs that directly address the legitimacy of the documents currently in Mr. Albright’s possession."
Albright’s face went paper-white. He took half a step backward toward his chair, his hands shaking so violently he could barely keep his briefcase closed. "Your Honor... this is an ambush. This violates state civil procedure. I request an immediate continuance!"

"Motion denied," Harrison said coldly. "Publish the evidence, Mr. Martinez."
