Chapter 8 - The Unveiling

Adam walked over to the table and leaned over Chloe's shoulder.
On the screen was a dossier bearing the insignia of Vance Global Biometrics. Below it was a live telemetry map of the northeastern United States. Several red dots blinked rhythmically along the Hudson corridor, tracking private security assets.
But at the center of the screen was a medical surveillance log dated yesterday afternoon.
*Subject: Maya Mercer (Designation: Apex-01)*
*Location: Bryant Park, Manhattan.*
*Status: Released under controlled exposure protocol.*
Adam’s breath caught in his throat. His mind reeled as the words rearranged themselves into a horrifying new reality.
"Controlled exposure protocol?" Adam read aloud, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "What does that mean?"
Chloe clicked through the nested sub-files, her hands shaking so violently she missed the trackpad twice. "It wasn't an escape, Adam."
"What are you saying?"
"David didn't tell her to hide in the trash can," Chloe said, tears welling in her eyes as she looked up at him. "Julian *placed* her there. They tracked you leaving your office at Mercer Tower. They knew your exact route to Le Bernardin. They calculated your arrival down to the minute."
Adam stood frozen.
The sound of the crying child. The carefully timed blizzard. The blue bag placed in plain view on the bench.
"It was a delivery," Adam whispered, the horrifying realization crashing down upon him like an avalanche. "Julian wanted me to find her."
"Why?" Marcus barked from the doorway, his hand instinctively resting on his sidearm. "If Vance wanted to harvest her, why give her to Mr. Mercer?"
Chloe opened an encrypted video file embedded in the folder. The screen flickered, revealing the polished, aristocratic face of Julian Vance sitting behind a mahogany desk in his penthouse office overlooking Central Park. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, his tailored three-piece suit immaculate. On his left pinky gleamed the heavy silver signet ring Maya had mentioned in her fever.
*"Hello, Adam,"* Vance's voice purred through the laptop speakers, smooth as silk and cold as dry ice.
The video had been recorded six hours ago.
*"If you are watching this, you have successfully retrieved our little investment from the cold. I apologize for the dramatic theatrics, but given your notorious moral squeamishness regarding our firm’s darker ventures, I knew you wouldn't take the call otherwise."*
Vance took a slow sip from a crystal tumbler of scotch.
*"You see, Adam, your brother David was brilliant, but foolish. He locked the Chimera neural encryption with a biometric key tied exclusively to the Mercer bloodline. Not just David's DNA—yours. Maya’s genetic matrix cannot be decoded without your retinal scan and direct biological authorization."*
May you like
Vance smiled, a predator showing its teeth.
*"You wouldn't have come to my laboratory willingly. But you would move heaven and earth to save David's daughter. Thank you for doing the heavy lifting, my boy. My retrieval team has been following the transponder in your Mercedes' emergency kit since you left Midtown."*
