Chapter 8 - Madison's True Face

Forty-eight hours after his arrest and subsequent release on bail for violating the restraining order, Mark sat in a dingy diner on the outskirts of Poughkeepsie. His mugshot had leaked to several local news outlets, accompanied by the headline: *Disgraced Wall Street Executive Arrested Stalking Estranged Wife After Triplet Birth Abandonment.*

The bell above the diner door jingled. Madison Vale walked in, scanning the vinyl booths with an expression of thinly veiled disgust. She was wearing sunglasses indoors, a designer trench coat cinched tightly around her waist. She slid into the booth across from him, not bothering to take off her glasses.

"You look terrible, Mark," she said flatly.

"What do you want, Madison?" Mark asked, staring into his black coffee. "I told you to leave me alone."

Madison leaned forward, lowering her sunglasses slightly. "I came to give you a reality check. Your career at Sterling is finished. The board is negotiating your buyout, and from what my father’s contacts tell me, they’re offering you pennies on the dollar to avoid a public trial. Emily has you cornered. She’s going to take your house, your savings, and full custody."

"Thank you for the update," he muttered sarcastically. "Did you come all the way up here just to gloat?"

"I came to offer you a way out," Madison said, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "Sell your remaining shares. Liquidate your private accounts before the judge finalizes the freeze. Come with me to London. My family still has connections there. We can start over. A clean slate. Away from the suburban scandal, away from the screaming babies and a wife who clearly hates you."

Mark looked at her for a long, silent moment.

The pieces fell into place with sickening clarity. Madison hadn't called him on Thursday because she was heartbroken over her ex-fiancé. She had called him because she knew her family was financially ruined. She had seen Mark Carter—wealthy, successful, easily flattered—as her lifeboat. She had deliberately orchestrated that afternoon to drive a wedge between him and Emily, ensuring that he would belong entirely to her.

"You knew," Mark whispered.

Madison frowned. "Knew what?"

"You knew Emily was in the hospital on Thursday. You knew she had been admitted that morning."

Madison’s eyes shifted, a micro-expression of guilt flickering across her features before she hardened them into defiance. "I saw a post your sister-in-law made on Facebook before she deleted it. So what? Triplet pregnancies are always hospitalized. How was I supposed to know she would go into labor that exact hour?"

"You asked me to turn my phone off because you knew someone would call," Mark said, his voice rising, a terrible, suffocating fury building in his chest. "You knew she was in danger, and you wanted to test your power over me. You wanted to see if I would choose your vanity over my wife’s life."

"Don't be dramatic, Mark!" Madison snapped, her mask slipping completely. "You were bored with her! You came running to me the second I texted you! You wanted an excuse to escape your boring, domestic life, and I gave it to you. If your family fell apart, it’s because you let it!"

Mark stood up so violently his knees slammed against the underside of the table, rattling the coffee cups. Several patrons turned to stare.

"Get out," Mark said, his voice trembling with a rage so absolute it frightened even Madison.

"Mark—"

"Get out of my sight before I do something that puts both of us in prison," he snarled.

Madison stared at him, realizing for the first time that her leverage was entirely gone. She sneered, grabbed her designer bag, and stood up. "Enjoy your miserable, lonely life, Mark. You deserve everything she’s doing to you."

May you like

She turned and clicked her heels out of the diner, disappearing into the gray mist outside. Mark slumped back into the booth, burying his face in his hands, completely and utterly broken.
