Chapter 5 - The Guard Dogs

It took Becca four hours to coax Nova out from under the bed.

She did it without speaking. She simply lay on the cold hardwood floor beside the dust ruffle, reading aloud from *Alice in Wonderland*, her voice steady, soothing, an anchor in the dark. By twilight, a small, cold hand had reached out from beneath the bed and tangled itself into Becca’s cardigan.

When the girls finally fell into an exhausted sleep—curled together in Luna’s bed like a litter of orphaned kittens—Becca crept out of the room, her bones aching with profound fatigue.

She found Valentino downstairs in the courtyard.

The night was freezing, frost forming on the stone balustrades. Valentino was wearing only a thin dress shirt, leaning against the parapet, a lit cigarette glowing orange between his fingers. Beside him stood Mateo, the scarred bodyguard from the restaurant.

Mateo saw her coming, nodded curtly, and melted into the shadows of the colonnade.

"I should fire you," Valentino said without turning around. "No one speaks to me like that. Not in front of my men. Not in my own house."

Becca walked up to the railing, leaning her elbows against the cold stone. "You won't fire me. Because for the first time in two years, Luna told you what she felt. She said red is angry. And she was talking about you."

Valentino took a slow drag, the smoke drifting up into the starless sky. "I am angry. Every waking second of my life, Becca. I am angry at the Marchesi family. I am angry at the guards who failed. I am angry at God. But mostly, I am angry at myself."

"Children don't differentiate between your anger at the world and your anger at them," Becca said gently. "When you walk into a room like an oncoming hurricane, they think they're the ones causing the storm."

Valentino tossed the cigarette butt into the gravel below. He turned to face her, his features carved out of shadow.

"Do you know why I picked the Onyx Room that night?" he asked.

"Philippe said you come once a year."

"It was Elena’s favorite place," he murmured. "We celebrated our anniversary there. Every year on the anniversary of her death, I take the girls there. I order their favorite food. I pretend that if I recreate the setting, the spell will break. That Elena will walk through the revolving doors and fix what I destroyed."

He stepped closer to her, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes. "Every year, it fails. Until a girl with paint on her nails and fire in her spine picked up a fork."

Becca’s heart hammered against her ribs, but not with fear. Something warm and dangerous sparked in the cold space between them. "I’m not a miracle worker, Valentino. I’m just listening to them. That’s all they ever wanted. Someone to listen to their silence instead of trying to drown it out."

"You listen to me, too," he said, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that made her skin tingle. "And that is a very dangerous thing to do in this house."

Before she could answer, a sharp radio squawk echoed from Mateo’s post near the colonnade.

*“Boss. Motion sensors on the southern perimeter. Sector four.”*

Valentino’s entire demeanor shifted in a microsecond. The grieving father vanished; the apex predator returned. He reached under his armpit, drawing a customized matte-black Kimber .45 with practiced, lethal grace.

"Get inside," he commanded Becca, his eyes scanning the tree line beyond the manicured lawn. "Go to the nursery. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me or Mateo."

"Valentino—"

"Go!"
