Chapter 8 - The Falling Facade

"This is an outrage!" Evelyn Sterling shrieked, clutching her emerald necklace as if it could protect her from the room's shifting tides. "Richard, do something! This is a private event!"

"It ceased being a private event the moment public municipal funds were funneled into the floral arrangements, Evelyn," Marcus replied without even looking at her.

He gestured to the ballroom's primary audio-visual technician, who was standing beside a terrified-looking young man with an IT badge. With a single click of a remote, the massive presentation screens flanking the stage flickered.

The glowing logo of *Sterling Construction* disappeared.

In its place appeared a high-resolution scan of the expedited loan document for Lumina Luxe. The forged signature of Naomi Ward was highlighted in glowing red, side-by-side with her verified legal signature from five previous state contracts, showing a discrepancy so obvious that even an amateur could identify the tracing lines.

A collective gasp swept through the four hundred guests.

"Turn that off!" Brandon screamed, lunging toward the AV booth, his face purple with terror. "Turn it off right now!"

Two police officers intercepted him instantly, grabbing his arms and forcing him back against the edge of the stage.

"Brandon Sterling," an investigator announced, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, commercial bank fraud, and the unlawful diversion of two point four million dollars from the Santa Clara Municipal Housing Authority."

Brianna began to back away from the stage, her crimson gown rustling loudly against the velvet skirting. "I didn't know anything about this! I was just the creative director! Brandon handled all the finances! Waylon was the one who set up the accounts!"

"Waylon is already in custody, Brianna," Marcus said, turning to face his niece with a look of utter disgust. "They arrested him at his garage twenty minutes ago. He has already surrendered his phone. And unlike Brandon, Waylon was remarkably eager to explain how you orchestrated the haircut incident to emotionally destabilize Naomi so she wouldn't look at the title encumbrance on her family's land."

Brianna froze. Her eyes darted around the room, looking for a single sympathetic face among the wealthy socialites she had been courting moments earlier. Every single one of them looked away, pulling back their designer gowns as if she were carrying a plague.

I stepped forward, walking slowly toward Brianna until I was standing barely three feet away from her.

She looked small now. Pathetic. Stripped of Brandon's protection and her manufactured victimhood, she was nothing more than an insecure, envious bully who had tried to build a kingdom on stolen sand.

"You told me hair grows back, Brianna," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "And you were right. Look at my mother."

Miriam stepped up beside me, meeting Brianna's terrified gaze with calm, regal indifference.

"My hair will grow," Miriam said, her voice steady and clear. "My family’s name will remain. But you, little girl... you will spend the best years of your youth explaining to a sentencing judge why you thought our dignity was something you could steal with a pair of scissors."

Brianna burst into hysterical, choking tears, sinking to the carpet in her expensive red dress as an officer stepped forward and placed her hands behind her back.

Richard Sterling attempted to step in front of Brandon, his chest heaving. "Naomi, please. Let's step into a private room. We can settle this. I will write a check right now. Three million dollars. Five million! Just drop the municipal complaint! Think of what this will do to my firm!"

I looked at the patriarch of the Sterling family—the man who had spent months treating me like a charity case, the man who had ordered me to bow my head and apologize to the woman who had assaulted my mother.

"Your firm is already gone, Richard," I said quietly. "The city council canceled your municipal contracts thirty minutes ago. You should have spent less time teaching your son how to steal, and more time teaching him that women are not collateral."

As the steel cuffs clicked shut around Brandon's wrists, he twisted violently, looking at me with wild, desperate eyes.

"Naomi! Please!" he sobbed, the arrogant mask completely shattered into pathetic, whimpering pieces. "I did it for us! I wanted to build an empire for our family! For our baby! You can't let them take me! I'm the father of your child!"

The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, horrified silence.

Richard and Evelyn turned to stare at me in absolute shock.

I looked down at Brandon, my hand coming to rest protectively over my stomach, my expression cold, unyielding, and final.

"You are not a father, Brandon," I said, my voice echoing off the high crystal ceilings. "You are simply a donor who failed his background check."

The officers dragged him toward the exit, his screams of protest fading down the carpeted corridors until the heavy double doors clicked shut behind him.
