Chapter 10 - The Lion’s Den

"Step out. Hands where I can see them. One twitch and your brains decorate the elevator wall."

The man holding the weapon was massive, clad in a tailored black suit, his face carved from scar tissue and granite. Behind him, another guard stepped forward, ruthlessly patting Hollis down, snatching her keys and flashlight.

"She’s just a cleaner, Leo," the second guard said, checking her employee ID badge. "Wrong floor, lady. How the hell did you get the override key?"

"I'm not here to clean," Hollis said, her voice remarkably level, staring directly into the eyes of the man holding the gun to her head. "I'm here to see Dante Moretti."

A cold, mocking chuckle drifted from across the room.

The penthouse was an immense, glass-walled expanse overlooking the frozen expanse of New Carthage. Italian marble floors reflected the gray daylight, while leather furniture and antique mahogany bookshelves framed a room that felt more like a throne room than an office.

Behind an expansive desk carved from obsidian sat a man.

Dante Moretti.

He looked barely thirty, with razor-sharp cheekbones, raven-black hair swept back from an aristocratic forehead, and eyes that were the exact, terrifying violet-gray of Elena’s—except his were stripped of all warmth, dead as arctic ice.

He wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, a heavy signet ring on his pinky, and an aura of absolute, terrifying violence held in check only by sheer will.

"A custodian," Dante said, his voice a low, cultured purr that carried effortless menace. He didn't look up from the document he was reviewing. "Who uses a maintenance override to enter my private quarters. Tell me, Leo... is security slipping, or are our enemies getting remarkably cheap with their assassins?"

"She’s clean, Boss. No wire, no steel."

Dante finally raised his head. His eyes fixed on Hollis, locking her in place like a spear pinning prey. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't have you thrown out the window behind you."

Hollis took a slow, deliberate breath. She reached slowly into her jacket pocket.

Both guards instantly racked the slides of their weapons, the sound deafening in the vaulted room.

"Easy," Dante murmured, raising a single finger. "Let her show what she brought."

Hollis drew out the stained, crumpled piece of stationery, along with the silver serpent key. She tossed them onto the marble floor. They slid across the polished stone, coming to rest at the base of Dante’s desk.

Dante’s eyes flicked down.

For a fraction of a second, the mask of the untouchable crime boss slipped. His pupils dilated. The color drained from his lips.

He stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the floor-to-ceiling glass.

He didn't touch the paper. He fell to one knee, his large, scarred hand hovering over the silver key shaped like a serpent swallowing its tail. His fingers trembled as he picked it up, pressing it against his palm.

"Where did you get this?" Dante whispered, his voice suddenly thick, jagged, and dangerous. He looked up at Hollis, a terrifying storm brewing in his violet eyes. "Where did you get this key?!"

"From the girl dying in the basement," Hollis answered coldly. "Your sister."
