Chapter 8 - The Purge

By sunrise, the storm had moved out over the Gulf Stream, leaving the Miami sky clean, washed in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
The estate was silent again. The broken glass had been swept, the bodies removed, and the blood scrubbed from the marble by a crew that asked no questions and left no traces.
I stood in my private study on the third floor, wearing a fresh linen shirt with the left sleeve pinned loosely over the bandages.
The door opened, and Matteo ushered Margaret Cole into the room.
My mother looked ten years older than she had at the gala. Her hair was pulled back into a severe bun, her designer suit wrinkled, her eyes hollow with the bitter realization that the world she had built through social manipulation had collapsed overnight.
"Robert Hart was arrested at the airport an hour ago," she said, her voice shaking with quiet fury. "Vanessa has fled to New York. The syndicate families are holding an emergency meeting in Naples. They want to know why blood was spilled on Cole property."
"Let them ask," I said, remaining seated behind my desk. "And tell them that if any of them wish to question my decisions, they can join Robert Hart in the federal penitentiary. Or in the bay."
Margaret walked toward the desk, leaning her hands on the polished mahogany. "You destroyed a thirty-year alliance for a woman who has no bloodline! Who brings nothing to the table! Have you forgotten who you are?"
"I remembered who I am, Mother," I replied, leaning forward, my gaze pinning her in place. "For three years, I let you dictate my life because I thought Claire’s death was my punishment for this life. I let you parade socialites through my home, let you try to turn my son into an heir before he was even a boy. But that ends today."
"I am your mother!" she hissed.
"And you are also an accessory to what happened last night," I said coldly, sliding a single document across the desk toward her.
Margaret glanced down at the paper. Her breath seized.
It was a bank record—a transfer from her personal Swiss account to a security firm in the Bahamas, dated forty-eight hours before the breach. She had not ordered the hit, but she had funded the logistics, desperate to remove Grace from the estate before the scandal destroyed her social circle.
"Julian… I didn't know they would send killers," she whispered, her voice suddenly cracking with genuine panic. "I only wanted her removed. I wanted her paid off and sent away so you would come to your senses!"
"You put my son in the path of cartel gunfire," I said, rising slowly to my feet. The pain in my shoulder was nothing compared to the absolute, frozen finality in my chest. "You are stripped of all family assets. The house in Palm Beach is sold. Your access to the trusts is terminated. A car is waiting downstairs to take you to the airport. You will live in the villa in Tuscany, and you will never set foot in the United States again."
"Julian! You cannot exile your own mother!" she cried, tears of humiliated rage spilling over her mascara.
"Be grateful that Claire’s blood is not on your hands, Mother," I said, turning my back toward her, looking out through the reinforced glass at the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. "Because if a single hair on Noah’s head had been harmed last night, you would not be going to Tuscany."
"Matteo," I called out softly. "Remove her."
I didn't turn around as my mother was escorted out of the room, her protests echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy mahogany doors shut them away forever.

The poison had been extracted. The fortress was clean.
