Chapter 4 - The Performance

I didn't stand up. I didn't reach out to return the hug Madison attempted to bestow upon me. She smelled of expensive white gardenia perfume and cold ambition. When she realized I wasn't moving, she let her hands fall gracefully to her sides, smoothing down her designer linen maternity top.

"Darlene," Gail spoke up, her voice honeyed with that false, aristocratic warmth she reserved for people she considered social inferiors. "We feel simply dreadful about yesterday. Truly, ghastly. Madison was in tears all evening once Kyle explained the... misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding?" I said, keeping my gaze firmly locked on Madison.

"Oh, absolute agony!" Madison gasped, pressing a manicured hand against her chest. "Darlene, you must understand! My pregnancy brain has been utterly uncontrollable lately. When I saw the blanket, I thought it was just... well, someone’s discarded wrapping material! With all the paper and boxes flying around, I was completely overwhelmed. I would never, *ever* knowingly discard a family heirloom!"

It was a magnificent lie. She delivered it without a single blink, her hazel eyes glistening with manufactured moisture. Twenty-four hours ago, she had run her fingers over the wool, scoffed at its lack of a designer label, and made a joke at my expense while her mother laughed.

"Is that so?" I said.

"Yes! Of course!" Madison hurried forward, pulling out the chair next to Kyle. "And then Kyle told me... he told me that dear Frank had arranged something so beautiful. A traditional family ceremony! A gift tucked inside the folds! Darlene, where is it? Let me hold it properly. I want to take a photograph with it right now and post a tribute to Frank on my page. People need to know what an extraordinary man he was."

I looked down at the table, then up at Kyle. He wouldn't meet my eyes. He stared at his coffee cup, his jaw clenched in deep humiliation, fully aware of the grotesque charade playing out in front of him.

"You want the blanket, Madison?" I asked softly.

"Of course I do! It belongs with the baby! It’s an heirloom!"

"The blanket is in my cedar chest upstairs," I said. "Where it will stay."

Madison’s smile stiffened at the corners. Gail’s eyes narrowed instantly, the polite veneer slipping just enough to reveal the predatory calculation beneath.

"Now, Darlene," Gail said, her tone dropping into a firmer, slightly patronizing register. "Let’s not be dramatic. We understand your feelings were hurt. It’s natural for someone of your... background... to feel sensitive about handmade items in high-society settings. But Kyle explained the legal nature of what Frank prepared. Frank’s intentions were for the *grandchild*. That means Kyle and Madison are the rightful custodians of that document."

"Does Frank's will mention you, Gail?" I asked mildly.

Gail blinked, taken aback. "I am the child's maternal grandmother!"

"And Frank was his grandfather," I said, rising slowly to my feet. Though my knees protested with a sharp ache, I stood at my full height. For forty years, I had dealt with difficult customers, demanding brides, and arrogant city inspectors. I knew how to hold a room without raising my voice.

"Frank spent his life working with his hands. He built schools, homes, and furniture that will outlast everyone in this room. He believed that an inheritance is not a jackpot to be spent on luxury leases and balloon arches. It is a sacred trust meant to preserve character."

I turned directly to Madison.

"You didn't see wrapping paper yesterday, Madison. You saw an old woman's gift that lacked a gold logo, and you tossed it in the garbage to prove to your friends that you were superior to the family you married into."

Madison’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "Kyle! Are you going to let her speak to me like this? In my condition?"

Kyle kept his head down. "Madison, stop."

"Stop?" Gail snapped, stepping forward. "Kyle Mercer, you grow a backbone this instant! Your father left a trust valued in the millions, and your mother is sitting on it out of spite! That land on the bluff belongs to our family now! We have developers in Greenwich who have already submitted preliminary inquiries for a luxury subdivision! That money belongs to your child’s future!"

A cold hush fell over the room.

Kyle’s head snapped up. "What did you say?"

Gail froze, realizing she had spoken too much.

May you like

"What developers, Gail?" Kyle asked, his voice shaking with sudden fury. "You’ve been talking to developers about my father’s land? Before the baby is even born? Before we even had the deed?"
