Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Shield

The basement tunnels beneath Mercer Hall were old, constructed during Prohibition to smuggle crates of rye from the river landings up into the private speakeasies of New Jersey’s elite. The air smelled of damp lime, ancient mortar, and the metallic tang of chilled water pipes.

Elena walked quickly, her sneakers squeaking softly on the concrete floor. She held Eli’s hand in a tight grip; on her other side, Noah kept pace, his small fingers tucked securely through the loop of Elena’s apron strings. He refused to let go.

Ahead of them walked Viktor, his massive frame practically blocking the narrow corridor. He carried a heavy tactical shotgun across his chest, a black duffel bag slung over his shoulder, and a handheld night-vision monocular hanging from his neck.

Behind them, Cole brought up the rear.

Every few dozen yards, Cole would pause, his ear cocked toward the floorboards above, listening to the heavy silence of the mansion.

“Mr. Mercer,” Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the furnace. “Where are we going?”

“The carriage house at the south perimeter,” Cole replied without stopping. “It has an armored panic suite built beneath the foundation. Air filtration, independent power, satellite uplinks. You will stay there with the boys.”

“And you?” Elena asked, turning her head slightly.

Cole didn't answer immediately. He checked the magazine of a heavy black semi-automatic pistol, snapping it back into place with a sharp, lethal *click*.

“A king does not hide in a cellar while wolves enter his home, Mrs. Bennett.”

“Daddy, please don't go,” Noah pleaded, his voice cracking again. “Stay with us.”

Cole paused. He reached down and rested his hand on Noah’s head, ruffling the boy’s dark hair. It was a gesture so human, so stripped of the terrifying mythos surrounding his name, that Elena felt a pang of profound sorrow for the man.

“I have to clean the house, Noah,” Cole said softly. “A home must be safe before a family can sleep in it. You know that.”

Noah swallowed hard, tears shining in his eyes, but he nodded. “Yes, Daddy.”

“Take care of your brother,” Cole added, his gaze flicking toward Eli.

The word *brother* hung in the cold, damp air of the tunnel.

Elena stared at Cole, her breath catching. Cole met her eyes, steady and unapologetic. In the crucible of violence that was closing in on them, the boundaries of class, wealth, and hierarchy had dissolved. Eli had stepped into the fire to shield Noah; in Cole Mercer’s world, that made him blood.

Suddenly, Viktor raised a closed fist.

Everyone halted instantly.

From above their heads—somewhere near the conservatory—came the muffled, rhythmic *thud* of heavy bootfalls. Then, the sharp, distinctive sound of shattering safety glass, followed by the deep, frantic barking of the guard dogs outside, abruptly cut short by suppressed gunfire.

“They breached the north terrace,” Viktor said in Russian, then immediately switched to English for Elena’s benefit. “Six men, maybe eight. Heavy armor.”

Cole’s phone vibrated against his ribs. He pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted screen, and muttered a dark curse.

“Daniel talked,” Cole said. “Before Viktor locked him in the vault, he sent a dead-man's transmission from a secondary transmitter hidden in his cuff. They aren't just coming for me. They know Noah is here. They want the bloodline eradicated.”

Elena pulled both boys behind her skirts, her teeth bared, every instinct in her body screaming to fight. “Over my dead body.”

Cole looked at her. In the dim, amber light of the tunnel, a ghost of an appreciative smile touched his lips.

“I believe you mean that, Mrs. Bennett,” Cole murmured. “Viktor, take them to the carriage vault. Lock the outer blast door. If anyone approaches without using the seven-digit cycling cipher, vent the gas canisters into the vestibule.”

“Understood, Boss,” Viktor grunted.

“Daddy!” Noah cried as Cole turned back toward the main cellar stairs.

Cole turned, his silhouette dark and immense against the dim tunnel light. “Keep your head down, Noah. I will see you at breakfast.”

May you like

With that, Cole Mercer vanished into the shadows, a specter of vengeance moving back toward his invaded home.
