Chapter 10 - New Foundations

Three months later.

The spring sun warmed the stone terraces of the Moretti estate in Connecticut. The scars of the winter assault had been completely erased; the west wing had been rebuilt with imported French limestone, the gardens were bursting with pale blue hydrangeas, and new security systems hummed silently beneath the manicured turf.

On the lower lawn, looking out over the sparkling waters of the Long Island Sound, stood two figures.

Emma Bennett wore a tailored dark blue suit, her hair gathered loosely at the nape of her neck. The welts on her wrists had faded into faint, silver lines that were barely visible unless the light caught them directly. In her hand, she held a thick leather portfolio containing the finalized reorganization decrees for Bennett Maritime Logistics—now the single largest commercial shipping network on the Eastern Seaboard.

Luca walked up beside her, holding two glasses of sparkling wine. He handed one to her.

"The federal court signed off on the final restitution order this morning," Luca said, his voice deep and warm in the spring breeze. "The Romano name has been officially scrubbed from all terminal deeds. You own the docks, Emma. All of them."

Emma took the glass, her fingers lightly brushing his. She looked out over the water, where three massive container ships bearing the blue Bennett crest were gliding smoothly toward the harbor.

"I spent three years dreaming of this day," she murmured, a soft smile touching her lips. "And now that it’s here, it feels strange."

"Strange how?"

"I thought I would feel vindictive," she said, turning her head to meet his dark, piercing eyes. "I thought I would want to celebrate their destruction. But all I feel is... peace. The slate is clean."

"Vincente was sentenced to thirty-five years yesterday," Luca noted casually. "Bianca received twelve for interstate fraud and conspiracy. She’ll be serving it in Danbury."

Emma nodded slowly. "And what about the Moretti family? I hear the Commission offered you the permanent seat on the port authority committee."

"I turned it down," Luca replied.

Emma raised an eyebrow, surprised. "You did? Why?"

Luca stepped closer, closing the distance between them until he stood just inches away, blocking out the morning glare. He looked down at her with an intensity that had nothing to do with contracts, alliances, or syndicate power.

"Because I found a partner who runs the docks far better than the Commission ever could," Luca said softly.

Emma’s breath hitched slightly. The pulse at her neck, visible above her collar, gave a telltale flutter. "A business partner, Mr. Moretti?"

"That depends entirely on you, Miss Bennett," Luca said. He reached into his coat pocket, but instead of the cold emerald-cut diamond he had taken back from Bianca, he produced a simple, elegant band of hammered platinum set with a single, deep blue sapphire.

"When I walked into that sitting room three months ago," Luca murmured, his voice thick with raw honesty, "I thought I was coming home to a political obligation that would slowly poison my life. Instead, I found a woman who possesses more honor, more courage, and more spine than every man I’ve ever commanded."

He held the ring out between them.

"I don't need a merger," Luca said. "I don't need an arranged treaty. I want you, Emma. Beside me, as an equal. In business, and in everything else."

Emma looked down at the sapphire, shimmering like the deep water of the Sound beneath the April sun. Her eyes glistened, not with the tears of a victim, but with the quiet, overwhelming joy of someone who had survived the dark and finally reached the morning.

She set her glass down on the stone balustrade, reached out, and closed her fingers over his hand.

"On one condition, Luca," she whispered, a brilliant, breathtaking smile illuminating her face.

Luca smiled back, his thumb tracing the soft line of her knuckles. "Name it."

"You never let anyone else clean your study again."

Luca let out a rich, low laugh that startled the seabirds from the lawn below. He slipped the platinum ring onto her finger, pulled her gently against his chest, and kissed her as the ships beneath them sounded their horns across the open sea, announcing a new empire built on truth, blood, and an unshakeable bond.
