Chapter 9 - The Harbor at Dawn

The Delaware River was calm at six in the morning, its dark waters reflecting the pale pink and gold ribbons of a winter sunrise.

Pier Twelve—the very place where violence had nearly torn their lives apart eighteen months earlier—was no longer a shadowy staging ground for syndicate warfare. Two massive new cargo ships, bearing the freshly painted white-and-gold insignia of Vale Humanitarian Logistics, sat moored against the docks, their cranes steadily loading crates of medical supplies and food destined for coastal relief programs.

Dominic stood at the end of the wooden pier, wearing a heavy charcoal overcoat against the morning chill, his hands tucked into his pockets.

Beside him stood Claire.

She was wrapped in a thick, cream-colored wool coat that reached her calves, her hands protected by soft leather gloves. The cold wind came off the water, tossing strands of her brown hair across her cheeks, but she didn't shiver. She stood tall, solid, comfortable in her own skin, looking out at the rising sun with the peaceful certainty of a woman who had fought a war and won her home.

Dominic pulled his right hand from his pocket, reached out, and slid his arm around her waist, pulling her firmly against his side.

Claire let out a contented sigh, leaning her head against the broad wall of his chest, watching the sea gulls circle above the loading cranes.

"Do you remember what you said to me on our wedding day?" Claire asked softly, her breath clouding in the freezing air.

Dominic looked down at her, his eyes warm, full of a fierce, protective tenderness that would never leave him. "I said a lot of foolish things that day, sweetheart."

"You told me that marriage was just another suit you put on," she said, looking up at him with a teasing, beautiful smile. "You said it was a practical arrangement for two people who needed order."

Dominic smiled—a genuine, unshadowed smile that transformed his harsh, scarred face into something breathtakingly handsome.

He turned toward her, wrapping both arms around her waist, pulling her plush, curved body completely against his, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her heart against his ribs. He laid his right hand flat against the lower curve of her back, resting his palm firmly, lovingly, over the healed scar beneath her coat.

"I lied," Dominic whispered, leaning down until his lips were an inch from hers. "It was never a suit, Claire. It was the only real thing I have ever had in my life."

Claire reached up, her gloved hands framing his rugged jaw, her thumbs tracing the lines beside his eyes.

"And are you afraid of me now, Dominic Vale?" she asked, her voice rich with love and laughter.

Dominic lowered his head and kissed her—a long, deep, breathtaking kiss that tasted of river mist, sweet coffee, and a future written without blood or fear.

"I am terrified of you," Dominic murmured against her lips as the sun broke fully over the horizon, flooding the harbor with pure, golden light. "Because if I ever lost you, my darling, there isn't an army on earth that could stop me from burning the world to ashes just to find you again."

Claire laughed, a sound of pure, unblemished joy that echoed across the quiet water, and wrapped her arms around her husband’s neck, holding him tight as the new day began.
