Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

The confrontation with Lorenzo forced Dante to double the security detail. The penthouse was placed under total lockdown, but inside Sophia's bedroom, the atmosphere remained hushed and calm. It took an hour of gentle rocking, soft humming, and another warm glass of honeyed milk to finally ease Sophia back to sleep after the terror of Lorenzo’s arrival.

When her breathing finally deepened into restful slumber, I carefully slipped out from under the covers. My muscles screamed with exhaustion. I quietly walked out of her suite and wandered into the dimly lit kitchen, hoping to find a glass of water.

A faint amber glow illuminated the living room.

Dante was sitting on the edge of the leather sofa, his elbows resting on his knees, a half-empty glass of Scotch held between his hands. The city lights cast long, brooding shadows across his face. He had discarded his tie, his shirt unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the taut tendons of his neck.

"She's asleep?" he asked without looking up, his voice gravelly in the dark.

"Deeply," I said, pouring water into a crystal glass from the tap. "She won't wake until morning."

I made a move to head back toward the guest suite, but his voice stopped me.

"Sit with me, Elena. Please."

The 'please' was quiet, hesitant, as if the word was foreign on his tongue. I hesitated, then crossed the room and sat at the opposite end of the vast sofa.

"I owe you an apology," Dante murmured, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Bringing you here... putting you in Lorenzo's crosshairs. My world is an open wound. It bleeds on everyone who gets too close."

"Why did he come here, Dante?" I asked gently, using his first name for the first time. "He wasn't just checking on Sophia. He was testing you."

Dante let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. "My father built an empire through loyalty and iron discipline. When he died, he left control of the family to me, bypassing Lorenzo. Lorenzo has spent the last ten years looking for a fracture in my armor. And six months ago, he found it."

The shadows in the room seemed to deepen.

"You think Lorenzo was behind the ambush," I breathed, the realization striking me with chilling clarity. "The attack that killed Julianna."

Dante looked up, his gray eyes burning like cold ash in the dim light.

"I don't think it, Elena. I know it. But Julianna's family is powerful in southern Italy. Without concrete, undeniable proof, moving against Lorenzo would trigger a civil war within the syndicate that would burn New York to the ground. And in the crossfire, Sophia would never be safe."

He set the glass down on the glass table with a heavy thud and ran both hands through his thick dark hair, looking completely shattered.

"I can conquer an empire," he whispered, his voice cracking with agony. "I can execute fifty enemies without blinking. But when my little girl screams in the dark, I am entirely powerless. I have failed her as a father."

"You haven't failed her," I said firmly, shifting closer to him on the sofa. "Look at what happened on the terrace today, Dante. She said her first word in six months. She reached for your hand. A broken child doesn't reach for someone who failed her. She reaches for her protector."

Dante lifted his head, staring at me in the dim glow of the Manhattan skyline. His gaze dropped to my lips, then rose back to my eyes, burning with an electric, overwhelming intensity that made the breath catch in my throat.

He leaned forward, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating from his skin.

"You called me her protector," Dante murmured, his voice a low, hypnotic rumble. "Who protects you, Elena?"

"I've always protected myself," I whispered, my heart thumping wildly against my ribs.

Dante reached out, his calloused thumb gently grazing the soft skin of my cheekbone, tracing a path down to the corner of my jaw. His touch was reverent, almost trembling in its gentleness—a stark contrast to the lethal violence he commanded with those same hands.

"Not anymore," he vowed softly, his thumb lingering against my pulse point. "From this night forward, Elena... the entire world answers to me before they ever lay a finger on you."
