Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the King

The darkness lasted less than a heartbeat before the violence began.
There was no sound of a door opening—only the explosive splinter of reinforced wood as the front entrance was blown inward off its hinges.
Muffled *thwip-thwip-thwip* sounds tore through the room, accompanied by tiny flashes of muzzle fire that strobed across the ceiling. Men screamed in the dark, the heavy thuds of falling bodies shaking the floorboards beneath Elena’s knees.
Elena kept her face buried in Noah’s neck, whispering fiercely over his sobs, “I’ve got you, baby, I’ve got you, you’re safe, Aunt Ellie has you.”
A man cursed, lunging toward the sofa. “Vale, get the kid!”
Before the guard could reach them, a massive silhouette moved through the gloom with terrifying speed. Alessandro appeared like a phantom from the dark. Elena heard the sickening crack of a broken forearm, followed by a wet choke as Alessandro drove the man’s head down into the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of fragments.
Emergency backup lights flickered on, bathing the penthouse in a dull, eerie amber.
Three of Vale’s men were already dead on the floor. Dante and two other operatives stood at the doors, weapons raised, sweeping the corners.
Marcus Vale stood backed against the floor-to-ceiling glass, his revolver shaking in his hand, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at the demon who had just invaded his sanctuary.
Alessandro stood in the center of the room. His linen shirt was smeared with fresh blood, his sleeves rolled up, his dark eyes locked on Vale with a primal, predatory hatred.
“Alessandro,” Vale stammered, raising the gun toward Noah. “I’ll kill him! I swear to God, I’ll—”
Alessandro didn’t even draw his weapon. In a blur of motion, he crossed the room, grabbed Vale’s wrist, and twisted it until the bone snapped through the skin.
Vale shrieked, dropping the gun. Alessandro grabbed him by the throat with one hand, lifting the older man completely off his feet and slamming him back against the panoramic window. The glass creaked under the impact.
“You touched my family,” Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, entirely devoid of emotion.
“Moretti... please... it was Hale! Hale set it up!” Vale choked, his legs kicking uselessly in the air. “Hale wanted Matteo gone! He wanted the harbor!”
“I know,” Alessandro whispered. “And Hale will join you before sunrise.”
Alessandro’s thumb dug into the carotid artery in Vale’s neck, cutting off the blood flow to his brain. Vale’s eyes bulged, his hands clawing weakly at Alessandro’s massive forearms, but it was like trying to break granite.
With a brutal, singular snap of his wrist, Alessandro ended it.
He released his grip, and Marcus Vale’s lifeless body slumped to the floor like a pile of dirty laundry.
The silence that returned was absolute, broken only by the muffled sobs of little Noah against Elena’s chest.
Alessandro stood over the corpse for five seconds, his chest heaving, his hands covered in red. Then, he turned slowly.
His eyes fell on Elena, still curled protectively over the sofa, her arms shielding the child. Her face was pale, smeared with dust and tears, but she looked up at him with pure defiance, refusing to look away from the monster he had just become.
Alessandro’s expression broke. The ruthless killer vanished, leaving behind a man trembling on the edge of a precipice.
He reached for a cloth from the bar, meticulously wiping the blood from his hands, throwing the ruined towel aside. Then, slowly, with hesitant steps he had never taken in his life, he approached the sofa.
He sank to his knees on the carpet before them.
“Elena,” he whispered, his voice cracking.
Elena sat back slowly, exhaling a breath that shook her entire frame. She pulled Noah gently from her lap, turning him toward the man kneeling on the floor.
Noah sniffling, his dark brown eyes—the exact shade, shape, and warmth of Matteo Moretti’s—looked into the face of his uncle.
Alessandro gasped, a sharp, ragged sound that sounded like a man drowning. He reached out a trembling hand, his fingers hovering inches from the boy’s cheek, terrified that touching him would turn him to dust.
“Matteo,” Alessandro breathed, a single tear cutting a clean path through the grime on his cheek.
Noah, sensing no danger from the weeping giant before him, slowly reached out his small hand and touched the dark serpent tattoo on Alessandro’s forearm. “Are you the superhero?” the little boy asked in a tiny, frightened whisper.
Alessandro broke. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently as two years of grief, guilt, and rage finally gave way before his brother's legacy.
Elena moved instinctively. She shifted forward, wrapping her arms around Alessandro’s neck, pulling his head against her chest, letting him weep against the curve of her neck while she stroked his dark hair.

“You’re safe now,” she murmured to both of them. “You’re all safe.”
