Chapter 6 - The Confession in Blood

Luca stood motionless in the dim light of the conservatory for a full minute after the tape clicked off. The only sound was the steady drip of condensation from the glass ceiling onto the broad leaves of the fig tree.
When he turned around, the man who looked back at us was no longer just the head of an organized crime family; he was a force of pure, apocalyptic reckoning.
"Bring the box," Luca ordered Armando. "Bring Claire and my mother back to the dining room."
We retraced our steps through the cold gallery. When the heavy doors of the dining hall swung open, the twenty-six guests snapped their attention toward us. Vanessa was still restrained by Antonio, her blonde hair falling in messy strands across her face, her eyes darting like those of an animal caught in a snare. Marco was hunched in a chair, vomiting into a silver ice bucket.
Luca walked to the head of the table. He did not sit.
He placed the leather-bound ledger, the flash drives, and the micro-cassette recorder onto the white tablecloth, right beside Vanessa’s crystal dessert plate.
"Silvio," Luca said.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Play the tape for our guests."
Silvio took the recorder, set it on the center of the table, and hit play.
Vanessa’s voice rang through the grand hall once more, cold and calculating, detailing her treachery, boasting about how Luca would be manipulated into surrendering his father’s empire, followed by the terrifying sounds of the crash that had nearly ended Sofia Moretti’s life.
When the tape clicked off for the second time, the dining room erupted into an uproar.
Old Capo Antonio slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the silverware. "Scum! Poisoning our own house! Betraying the Don's mother!"
"Traitor!" shouted another capo from the West Side. "She brought unwashed poison through our docks under the Moretti name!"
"Luca! Luca, please!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping to her knees again, crawling across the floor toward Luca’s polished shoes. "It wasn't my idea! It was Marco! Marco owed fifty million to the cartel in Sinaloa! They threatened to kill him! They were going to slaughter our entire family! I had to protect him! I had to find leverage!"
"You cut the brakes on my mother's car," Luca whispered. He didn't look down at her.
"I didn't cut them! Marco did! Marco hired a mechanic from the yard! I tried to stop him, Luca, I swear to God I tried to stop him!"
"You sat in the passenger seat," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register that made the taper candles flicker. "You rode with her until the Lake Shore curve. You jumped onto the grassy verge before the turn, knowing she was heading straight for the concrete barrier at sixty miles an hour."
Vanessa reached for Luca's trouser leg, her manicured nails clawing at the fabric. "Luca, I loved you! I did it for us! We could have owned the entire Midwest! Your mother was holding you back! She was living in the past!"
Luca stepped back, pulling his leg from her grasp as if she were a puddle of sewage.
"Claire," Luca called out softly.
I stepped forward, my hands clasping my apron. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
