Chapter 7 - A Mother's Counterattack

Three weeks later, the grand jury returned a twenty-four-count indictment against Evelyn Carter, Victor Carter, Julian Cross, and Dr. Aris Harrison. The charges ranged from aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and child endangerment to insurance fraud, corporate embezzlement, and attempted second-degree murder.

Yet, despite the overwhelming physical evidence, Evelyn Carter was not a woman who surrendered easily.

From her private suite in the women's correctional facility—secured by an astronomical legal retainer—she unleashed a vicious, multi-million-dollar public relations campaign. Her new legal team, hired from a notorious Manhattan firm, began leaking fabricated stories to the regional tabloids.

They claimed Clara was a former substance abuser who had suffered a severe, violent episode of postpartum psychosis, and that Evelyn and Victor had merely been attempting an emergency domestic intervention to protect the Carter heir. They released heavily edited snippets of security footage showing Clara stumbling through the halls, disheveled and screaming, carefully omitting the days of forced starvation and drugging that had preceded her collapse.

Daniel sat in the living room of the private coastal cottage he had leased three hours north of the city. Clara was sitting on the rug in front of him, Noah resting comfortably in a baby wrap against her chest. Her color had returned, though she was still twenty pounds lighter than she had been before delivery.

Her laptop was open on the coffee table, displaying the front page of the *Metro Herald*: **"TRAGEDY AT ASHWOOD: Carter Matriarch Claims She Saved Grandson from Unstable Mother."**

“She’s trying to rewrite it,” Clara said. Her voice was steady, devoid of the terror that had consumed her weeks ago. “She’s using her old society friends to turn this into a he-said-she-said debate before the trial even starts.”

“Vance says the judge won't allow the press leaks to affect the jury pool,” Daniel said, setting a mug of herbal tea beside her. “We don't need to engage with them, Clara. The medical records are absolute. The fishing line alone is enough to put her away for ten years.”

“No,” Clara said, looking up at him. “Ten years isn't enough. Evelyn Carter cares about only one thing in this world, Daniel. She doesn't care about Victor, she doesn't care about you, and she didn't care about Noah. She cares about *reputation*. She cares about the Carter name being revered in the drawing rooms of this state.”

Clara turned the laptop toward him. “I’m not going to hide in this cottage while she paints me as a deranged monster who tried to hurt my own child. I want to do an interview.”

Daniel frowned, kneeling beside her. “Clara, the defense lawyers will tear you apart on cross-examination if you go on television. They’ll use every word you say to claim you’re grandstanding.”

“Let them try,” Clara said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, quiet authority. “I kept a journal, Daniel.”

Daniel stopped. “You kept a journal at Ashwood?”

“On my phone, before they took it, and then on the margins of the baby books in the nursery,” Clara said. “I wrote down every time Evelyn withheld water. I wrote down the dates, the times, the exact words she whispered to me while Noah was screaming in his crib. I wrote down the names of the guards who stood outside my door while I begged for clean dressings. And Marissa took pictures.”

Daniel looked at Marissa, who had just stepped out of the kitchen holding a basket of fresh laundry.

The older housekeeper nodded quietly. “The second day, Mr. Daniel. When Madam Evelyn made Mrs. Clara scrub the floor. I couldn't stop them—Victor threatened to have my son’s visa revoked if I interfered—but I used my burner phone to take video from the pantry grate. I have Victor dragging her. I have Madam Evelyn kicking the water bucket over so Clara would have to start again.”

A terrible, cold satisfaction bloomed in Daniel’s chest. “You have Victor on video?”

“Yes, sir,” Marissa said. “And I gave a copy to Detective Vance, but I kept the originals on a flash drive.”

Clara took Daniel’s hand, her grip surprisingly strong. “We don't wait for the trial, Daniel. We don't let her control the narrative for another single day. We give the footage to Sarah Lin at Channel Four News. We tell the entire city what kind of family Evelyn Carter really built.”
