Chapter 8 - The Corrupt Doctor Falls

The preliminary hearing for Dr. Julian Ross took place in Department 11 of the Santa Clara County Courthouse in San Jose.
Because Ross’s crimes involved medical malpractice, narcotics distribution, and federal civil rights violations, the courtroom was packed with representatives from the California Medical Board, the Department of Health and Human Services, and dozens of investigative journalists.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, my cast still securely strapped across my chest, watching as Ross was led in. Without his expensive Italian suits, his silver hair uncombed, the once-revered psychiatrist looked like a hollow shell of a man.
The presiding magistrate, Judge Kenneth Wu, peered down at Ross with absolute disdain.
“Dr. Ross,” Judge Wu began, “the grand jury has returned a thirty-two-count indictment against you, including conspiracy to commit kidnapping, fraudulent medical certification, distribution of controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose, and healthcare fraud. How do you plead?”
Ross’s attorney, a nervous-looking public defender appointed after his private counsel recanted due to conflicts of interest, leaned toward him.
Ross cleared his throat, his hands trembling as he gripped the podium. “Guilty, Your Honor. To all counts.”
A collective gasp swept through the press gallery.
“In exchange for your plea,” Marcus Kane announced from the prosecution table, “the defendant has executed a comprehensive proffer agreement. Dr. Ross has agreed to provide sworn, unreserved testimony in the upcoming capital murder trial of Yasmin Darcy and the aggravated torture trial of Mark Darcy.”
Judge Wu leaned forward. “Dr. Ross, before I accept this plea, I want you to state clearly for this court: did you knowingly conspire with Yasmin and Mark Darcy to unlawfully deprive Alana Darcy of her liberty and legal autonomy through the fabrication of medical records?”
Ross swallowed hard, his eyes briefly darting toward me in the gallery before quickly looking down at the floor, unable to bear my gaze.
“Yes, Your Honor,” Ross said, his voice cracking with shame. “I prepared a fabricated psychiatric assessment diagnosing Miss Darcy with paranoid schizophrenia and severe cognitive impairment. I had arranged for the administration of high-dose haloperidol and lorazepam to ensure she would be unable to communicate effectively with legal counsel or law enforcement. I did this in exchange for seventy-five thousand dollars in illicit financial compensation.”
“And did you engage in similar conduct with other elderly or vulnerable individuals at the behest of wealthy patrons?” Judge Wu pressed, his voice dripping with icy contempt.
“Yes, Your Honor,” Ross whispered.
“May God have mercy on your soul, Dr. Ross,” Judge Wu said, slamming his gavel down with an authoritative thud. “Because this court will not. The plea is accepted. Your medical licenses in the State of California are permanently revoked effective immediately. You are remanded to federal custody pending formal sentencing, where you face a minimum of twenty-five years in federal prison.”
As the U.S. Marshals cuffed Ross and led him away, several journalists rushed out into the hallway to broadcast the breaking news.

Ana leaned over to me, her hand resting on my shoulder. “One pillar down, Alana. Now we take down the foundation.”
