Chapter 10 - Sloane’s Reckoning

“Grant! Where are you?” Sloane screamed over the background noise of rain and traffic. “I’m at the Four Seasons, and the front desk just told me my room card has been declined! They took my luggage into the back office! They’re threatening to call the police if I don’t settle an eight-thousand-dollar balance right now!”

Grant rubbed his wet forehead, stumbling toward a nearby coffee shop just to get out of the downpour. “Sloane, stop shouting at me. I have bigger problems right now. Take an Uber to the penthouse and wait there.”

“I tried!” Sloane wept, her rage boiling over into hysterical panic. “The elevator won’t even go up to the penthouse! The building concierge told me the unit has been sealed by court order! Grant, what the hell is going on? You told me you owned that building!”

“I... I leased the penthouse through the family holding company!” Grant snapped, losing his temper as he shoved open the glass door of the café, water dripping from his ruined coat onto the clean linoleum. “Clara locked the accounts! She’s playing games, trying to scare me into begging for forgiveness! Just put the hotel on your personal Amex, Sloane!”

“My personal Amex?” Sloane shrieked. “The card you gave me *was* the company card! I don’t have an eighty-thousand-dollar credit line on my personal card, Grant! I gave up my apartment in Back Bay because you told me we were moving into the penthouse permanently! You told me she was a spineless trust-fund mouse who would sign whatever divorce settlement you put in front of her!”

The customers in the café turned to stare at Grant. He slunk into the corner, his teeth chattering from the cold and humiliation.

“Shut your mouth, Sloane! You don’t know anything about business!”

“I know you’re broke!” Sloane fired back, her voice turning venomous, stripping away the sweet, admiring persona she had worn for the past six months. “You’re completely broke, aren’t you? That’s why those lawyers were laughing in that boardroom! You didn’t build Mercer Holdings—she did! You’re nothing without her!”

“I made this company!” Grant roared into the phone. “I am the visionary! Clara didn’t do a damn thing except inherit a trust fund from her grandfather!”

“Then pay my hotel bill, ‘visionary’!” Sloane spat. “Because if I spend one night in a holding cell because of your stolen money, Grant, I’m going straight to the district attorney. I kept every email you sent me authorizing those Dior receipts under ‘protective gear.’ Let’s see how your visionary reputation holds up at a grand jury hearing!”

The line went dead.

Grant stared at the black screen of his phone, his chest heaving, his vision blurring with sheer panic.

*Grand jury hearing.*

The words echoed in his skull like a death knell. It wasn’t just bankruptcy he was facing. If the forensic accountants looked deeper into line item 402, they wouldn’t just find Sloane’s dresses.
