Chapter 6 - First Breath and Frozen Veins

Arthur Vance did not confirm the statement. He did not need to. The truth was written in the cold, unyielding geometry of his face.

Vanessa Drake, however, was too dense, too blinded by her own self-importance, to read the tectonic shift that had just occurred in the corridor.

“I don’t care who you are!” Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms. “Your daughter is completely unhinged! She attacked me in the waiting room! She tried to kill my unborn baby because she was jealous that Marcus loves me! She got exactly what she deserved when she fell, and I am pressing full criminal charges against her the second she wakes up!”

Arthur slowly turned his head to look at her.

The expression on his face was not rage. Rage was a common, vulgar emotion that led to raised voices and sloppy mistakes. What Arthur Vance wore was the look of an entomologist observing a wasp that had stung his child—a creature that would not merely be swatted, but pinned to a corkboard and dissected until not a single fiber remained intact.

“Thomas,” Arthur said softly.

“Sir,” Reyes stepped forward, standing at Arthur’s shoulder.

“Is Sarah stable for transport?”

“Dr. Hammond has stabilized her central arterial line,” Reyes reported, consulting his tablet. “The bleeding has been arrested. However, she remains comatose. Moving her at this juncture carries significant clinical risk.”

“Then we do not move her,” Arthur said. “We move the world to her. Reyes, clear the third and fourth floors of this facility. Relocate all non-critical patients to St. Jude’s via private ambulance at my expense. Bring in the critical care neurology team from Johns Hopkins by helicopter. They have one hour to be inside this room.”

“It’s already in motion, sir,” Reyes replied without hesitation.

“Now, wait just a damn minute!” Marcus found his voice, stepping between Arthur and the ICU doors. His face was flushed with a mixture of humiliation and territorial panic. “You have no legal right to dictate my wife’s care! I am her power of attorney! I am her next of kin! You walked out of her life ten years ago! You don’t get to march in here and take over!”

Arthur looked at Marcus as if he were an insect buzzing against the glass of a closed window.

“Your power of attorney,” Arthur said, his voice flat, “was revoked three minutes after Sarah was admitted through those emergency doors.”

Marcus barked a bitter laugh. “Revoked? By whom? She’s in a coma!”

“By the living trust she signed on her twenty-first birthday,” Arthur stated, holding out his hand without looking. Reyes immediately placed a red leather binder into his palm. “A trust that predates your courtship by five years, Mr. Thornton. Under the terms of the Vance Heritage Codicil, which Sarah never legally dissolved despite her personal rebellion, any medical crisis involving potential homicide, domestic betrayal, or severe negligence by an active spouse automatically reverts all guardianship, medical discretion, and conservatorship to the Vance family office.”

Arthur tossed the binder onto the vinyl chair where Vanessa had been sitting.

“You are nothing in this room, Marcus,” Arthur continued, his voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register. “You are a trespasser in the presence of my daughter’s blood.”

“Homicide?” Vanessa’s voice squeaked, a sudden tremor of genuine terror finally cracking through her veneer of arrogance. “Who said anything about homicide? It was an accident! I was defending myself!”

Arthur turned his full attention back to Vanessa.

“A woman who defends herself does not plant her heels and lean her center of gravity forward,” Arthur said coldly. “A woman who defends herself does not drive both palms into the sternum of a heavily pregnant woman while sneering about her husband’s infidelity.”

Vanessa took a step back, her back hitting the wall. “You... you weren't there. You couldn't know that.”

“I know everything that occurs within fifty miles of my daughter,” Arthur said. “I have known every hotel room Marcus Thornton booked under his corporate alias. I have known every wire transfer he made to your offshore shell account in Grand Cayman to purchase that apartment on 72nd Street. I allowed it because Sarah forbade me from interfering in her marriage. She wanted to believe in him. She wanted to see if he would find his own soul.”

Arthur stepped closer to Vanessa until the young woman could see the reflection of her own terrified, pale face in the pupils of his eyes.

“He did not find it,” Arthur whispered. “And you... you are about to discover what happens when you touch the only thing on this earth I value.”
