Chapter 10 - You Are Mine

Spring came late to the Crane estate, but when it arrived, it came with an explosion of white mountain lilies and green shoots bursting through the black earth.
From the stone terrace overlooking the valley, the city in the distance looked small, quiet, and powerless. The towering skyscrapers of the financial district were merely glass needles against the horizon, incapable of reaching the fortress high in the pines.
"Mama! Look! Birdie!"
Wren was walking now. Her little legs, clad in yellow overalls, carried her across the smooth bluestone flags of the terrace with unsteady, joyful determination. In her hand, she brandished Peanut, whose torn ear had been meticulously repaired by Madame Laurent with gold thread.
"I see it, sweetie," I called out, leaning back into the soft cushions of the wicker lounger, a cup of Earl Grey steaming on the glass table beside me.
Footsteps clicked rhythmically against the stone.
Julian walked out through the French doors, carrying a leather dispatch case under his arm. He had abandoned his usual three-piece suits for dark denim trousers, a charcoal cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms, and leather boots. He looked younger, the harsh lines around his eyes softened by months of undisturbed sleep.
Wren immediately changed course, squealing with delight and barreling toward his legs like a tiny, unstoppable missile.
"Uncle Julian!" she yelled.
Julian caught her under the arms with effortless ease, swinging her high into the air until she shrieked with laughter, before settling her securely onto his hip. He kissed her forehead, completely unbothered when she wiped a sticky, strawberry-stained hand across the cheekbone that had once made Don Bernardo Caruso tremble.
"Did you eat your fruit?" he asked her, his voice warm with a quiet, paternal pride that still took my breath away every time I witnessed it.
"All of it!" Wren declared, holding up three fingers to indicate 'all.'
"Good girl," Julian said, setting her down gently onto the soft grass beside the stone balustrade, where Marcus stood twenty feet away, smiling his crooked, scarred smile as he tossed a red rubber ball for the two German shepherds guarding the terrace perimeter.
Julian walked over to my lounger, sitting on the wide stone edge beside my hip. He reached out and took my left hand, his thumb stroking the heavy platinum band that now rested beneath the emerald signet ring of the Crane family.
"The council meeting concluded twenty minutes ago," he said, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of my lips.
"And?" I asked, smiling up at him, my fingers tangling in the dark hair at the nape of his neck.
"The harbor is peaceful," he said, resting his forehead against mine. "The docks in Boston have signed the new security accords. The Maroni syndicate has retired its territory in the south. There is nothing left to fight, Clara."
"A crime boss with nothing to fight," I teased, tracing the familiar curve of his broken nose. "What are you going to do with your time?"
Julian smiled—a real, luminous smile that transformed his brutal face into something breathtakingly handsome. He looked out over the terrace, watching Wren chase the shepherds through the sea of blooming lilies, her yellow elephant held triumphantly above her head.
"I was thinking about building a swing set down by the orchard," he said softly. "A wooden one. With two swings. In case Wren needs a brother."
I pulled his head down, capturing his mouth with mine, kissing him with all the fierce, unyielding devotion that had brought us through the fire and the blood. His arms wrapped around my waist, lifting me effortlessly from the lounger, pulling me flush against his chest, holding me as though I were the only solid thing in an unraveling universe.
"You belong to me, Julian Crane," I murmured against his lips.
May you like
He pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, his sea-glass gaze burning with an absolute, unshakeable certainty.
"I have been yours since the moment you dropped that tray, my love," he whispered. "And you are mine. Forever."
