Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Arrogance

Back in Bayside, Queens, Linda Miller was having the morning of her life.
She sat at her kitchen table, sipping chamomile tea from her best china cup, surrounded by the catalogs of high-end home improvement stores.
"Granite countertops for the kitchen," she muttered to herself, circling an expensive marble slab with a red pen. "And we’ll tear out this old laminate flooring. Now that Evan is getting four and a half million dollars, I’m not living in this dump another month. We’ll buy a brownstone in Manhattan. Let that little orphan Olivia scrub the floors there—if Evan even decides to let her stay."
She laughed aloud at the thought.
The image of Olivia standing in the guest room, clutching her suitcase with that bruised face and those big, pathetic eyes, brought a warm sensation of triumph to Linda’s chest. She had always hated the girl. Olivia was too quiet, too composed, too independent. She didn't fawn over Linda’s cooking; she didn't beg for approval. A daughter-in-law was supposed to be a servant, someone to wait on her son hand and foot while Linda directed the household.
The front door suddenly burst open with a violent crash.
Linda jumped, spilling tea across her catalog. "Evan? Honey, is that you?"
Evan stumbled into the kitchen.
He didn't look like a CEO. His tie was undone, dangling around his neck like a noose. His expensive suit jacket was torn at the shoulder where security had gripped him, his hair was wild, and his face was bloated, red, and streaked with tears and snot.
"Evan!" Linda shrieked, rushing over to him. "What happened? Did you get mugged? Where is your briefcase?"
Evan collapsed onto a kitchen chair, burying his face in his hands, his entire body convulsing with shuddering gasps.
"It’s over, Mom," he wheezed. "It’s all over."
"What are you talking about? Did the meeting run late? Did they reschedule?"
"Olivia..." Evan choked out, lifting bloodshot, terrified eyes to his mother. "Olivia is Bennett. She is the Chairwoman of Bennett Global Capital."
Linda blinked. A beat of silence passed, and then she let out a loud, scoffing bark of laughter.
"What kind of nonsense is that? Evan, did you hit your head? Olivia Vance is a copywriter from an orphanage! She doesn't have two nickels to rub together! She probably followed you to your meeting and made a scene because she’s jealous of your success!"
"Listen to me, you stupid old woman!" Evan roared, slamming both fists onto the table so hard the teacup shattered onto the floor. "She owns the building! She owns the investment firm! She owns Apex Capital! She bought our debt! They’re calling the two-point-one million dollar note today! Today!"
Linda stepped back, the color slowly draining from her wrinkled cheeks. Her hand flew to her throat.
"No... no, that’s impossible. She’s... she’s an orphan..."
"She inherited billions!" Evan screamed, pulling at his hair in absolute madness. "Billions! And you handed her a mop bucket! You told me to slap her! You told me to throw her out!"
"You slapped her too!" Linda shrieked, terror suddenly piercing through her denial. "You’re the one who hit her! Don't you dare blame me! What about my house? What about the deed?"
Before Evan could answer, the sharp, authoritative blare of a police siren chirped outside.
Linda ran to the front window and pulled the curtain aside.
Three vehicles had pulled up onto their quiet residential street. Two black-and-white NYPD cruisers, and behind them, a sleek black Mercedes sedan bearing the discreet silver crest of Bennett Global Security.

"Evan..." Linda whispered, her voice trembling violently. "The police are outside."
