Chapter 7 - DENISE’S HOUSE OF CARDS

At five-thirty in the afternoon, while the rest of her family was being booked into federal custody, Denise Vance was sitting in the private dining room of the exclusive Casino Club on Delaware Place.

Denise was sixty-one years old. She had never worked a day in her life. Her identity was entirely constructed around her pedigree, her chairmanship of the Lake Forest Botanical Guild, and her annual appearances on the society pages of the *Chicago Tribune*.

She was sipping a dry martini, her hands steady, talking to two elderly socialites who sat across from her.

“It’s simply an absurd misunderstanding,” Denise said, offering a practiced, fragile smile. “Ava has always been so volatile. Even as a child, she had these dreadful hysterical fits. The stress of the pregnancy simply overwhelmed her. Martin and Caleb are dealing with the legal technicalities. You know how overzealous these young local prosecutors can be when a prominent family is involved.”

One of the women, Mrs. Eleanor Kensington, looked at Denise with an expression that was far from sympathetic. She held up her phone.

“Denise,” Eleanor said quietly. “Have you seen the news? The Department of Justice just held a press conference on CNN.”

Denise paused, her martini glass frozen halfway to her lips. “What?”

“They’ve seized Vance Holdings,” Eleanor continued, her voice cold and distant. “They’ve arrested Martin, Richard, Thomas, and the boys. They’re calling it the largest racketeering and corporate homicide indictment in the state’s history.”

Denise let out a sharp, nervous laugh. “Oh, Eleanor, don’t be ridiculous. Cable news loves drama. Martin will have the governor—”

The heavy oak doors of the private dining room burst open.

The quiet, refined atmosphere of the country club was shattered instantly. Four female federal agents wearing blue tactical windbreakers with *FBI* emblazoned in gold across their backs walked in, followed by two uniformed Chicago police officers.

The club’s maître d' trailed behind them, fluttering his hands in pure panic: “Excuse me! You cannot be in here! This is a private members-only establishment! I will call the police!”

“We are the police,” Special Agent Sarah Lin said, walking directly to Denise’s table.

The dining room went completely silent. Silverware clattered against fine porcelain. High-society matrons turned in their chairs, eyes wide with shock.

Denise set her martini down, her chest heaving under her silk blouse. “What is the meaning of this outrage? How dare you enter this club!”

Sarah Lin pulled a federal arrest warrant from her jacket and laid it beside Denise’s martini glass, right on the pristine white linen tablecloth.

“Denise Vance,” Sarah said, her voice carrying across the entire dining room. “You are under arrest for federal conspiracy to commit enterprise homicide, financial fraud, and witness tampering.”

Denise scoffed, rising from her chair with all the haughty indignation she could muster. “You’ve lost your mind! I am a grandmother! I did nothing! I was simply visiting Arthur’s home!”

“You didn’t do nothing, Denise,” Sarah said coldly. “We just finished executing a search warrant on your personal residence in Lake Forest. In your private bathroom, hidden inside an antique vanity, we found two vials of prescription benzodiazepines. Liquid solution. High concentration.”

Denise’s eyes widened, a flicker of naked panic piercing through her aristocratic mask.

“The toxicology report on Ava came back two hours ago,” Sarah continued, stepping closer. “Ava had forty milligrams of that exact compound in her bloodstream when she arrived at the trauma bay. You slipped it into her iced tea before Caleb and Martin cornered her. You drugged your eight-month pregnant daughter so she wouldn't be able to run or defend herself when they demanded she sign the company away.”

Gasps of horror rippled across the dining room.

Eleanor Kensington pushed her chair back, looking at Denise with unvarnished disgust, pulling her handbag away as if Denise were carrying a plague.

“You… you monster,” Eleanor whispered.

“It’s a lie!” Denise shrieked, her voice losing every shred of cultured refinement, turning raw and screeching. “Ava was hysterical! She was screaming at her father! She needed to be calmed down! I was helping her! I’m her mother!”

“You’re a criminal,” Sarah Lin said. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”

“No! I won’t! Take your hands off me!” Denise flailed, attempting to pull away.

The two female agents stepped forward, grabbed Denise’s wrists, twisted them behind her back, and snapped the steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, heavy *click*.

“Denise Vance, you have the right to remain silent,” Sarah began reciting, her voice loud, clear, and unrelenting. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…”

As they marched Denise out of the dining room, past fifty of her peers, her society friends pulled their napkins to their faces, turning their backs on her. Denise’s designer shoes tripped on the carpet, her perfectly styled hair falling into her face as she wept and cursed:

“Martin will kill you for this! Caleb will destroy you! Do you know who I am? *I am a Vance!*”

Nobody answered her.

Outside, the cold Chicago wind whipped her face as the agents pushed her into the back of an unmarked federal cruiser, the door slamming shut with the finality of a prison vault.
