Chapter 5 - The Injunction

Gloria ran out onto the front porch, her silk robe flapping wildly in the winter wind.

"What is the meaning of this?!" she screamed, her voice shrill and trembling with rage. "Darren, what are the police doing here?!"

A deputy sheriff stepped out of the first cruiser, holding a manila folder, while Marcus Vance stepped forward, flanked by his two legal associates.

"Gloria Miller?" the deputy asked, walking up the front steps.

"I am Mrs. Vance!" Gloria shrieked, clutching her collar. "This is my house! Who gave you permission to park on my private property?!"

"Ma'am, I am Deputy Miller from the County Sheriff’s Department," the officer said with absolute procedural calm. "I am here to execute a signed court order from Judge Harrison of the Superior Court, Chancery Division."

The deputy handed Gloria a thick, twenty-page legal document bearing the raised golden seal of the State Superior Court.

Across the top of the first page, printed in bold, capitalized letters, were the words:

**EMERGENCY EX-PARTE TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER, FREEZING OF ASSETS, WRIT OF ATTACHMENT, AND NOTICE OF LIS PENDENS.**

Gloria’s eyes darted across the text. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably. "This... this is nonsense! Arthur signed these over! He gave Darren the house!"

"Paragraph four, Mrs. Miller," Marcus Vance said, stepping up to the bottom of the porch stairs. "The court has found probable cause that the deed transfer executed on the eleventh was obtained via elder financial abuse, fraudulent misrepresentation, and criminal forgery."

"Forgery?!" Darren yelled, stomping over from the Porsche. "He signed it himself! I watched him sign it!"

"We have already submitted sworn affidavits from Arthur Vance’s treating physicians at St. Jude's Hospital," Marcus replied smoothly. "At the time of the alleged execution of that deed, Arthur Vance had a blood-serum level of heavy sedatives administered under your direction, rendering him legally non compos mentis. Furthermore, your aunt, Brenda Higgins, has already been visited by state investigators this morning."

Darren’s face went chalky white. "Aunt Brenda?"

"Miss Higgins," Marcus continued, relishing every syllable, "has already surrendered her notary logbook under a grand jury subpoena. Curiously, her logbook contains no entry, no thumbprint, and no state identification verification for Arthur Vance on that date. That is a direct criminal violation of the state penal code. She is currently at the district attorney’s office, giving a full confession to avoid immediate incarceration."

Gloria gasped, dropping the papers into the snow. "Brenda wouldn't... she wouldn't betray us!"

"Brenda doesn't want to spend four years in state prison for your greed, Mrs. Miller," Marcus said.

"Now, as to the vehicles," Marcus turned toward the deputy. "The 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 parked in this driveway was purchased with funds illegally diverted from Arthur Vance’s retirement account. Under the emergency writ of attachment signed two hours ago, that vehicle is seized as evidence of grand larceny."

A flatbed tow truck turned onto Crestview Lane, its hydraulic arms clattering into place.

"No!" Darren screamed, lunging toward his car. "No! That's my car! I signed the purchase order! You can't take my car!"

"Step back, son!" the deputy ordered, stepping between Darren and the vehicle, his hand resting firmly on his utility belt. "Touch that vehicle, and you will be arrested for obstruction of justice. The court order is clear: all assets held by Vance Heritage Holdings LLC are under immediate judicial receivership."

"Who is the receiver?!" Gloria screamed, tears of fury finally breaking through her heavy makeup. "Who is behind this?!"

Marcus stepped aside, gesturing toward the second car that had just pulled up behind the tow truck.

It was a sleek, midnight-blue sedan.

The driver’s door opened, and Claire stepped out.

She was not wearing the old coat from the night before. She was wearing a tailored charcoal wool suit, black leather gloves, and Italian boots. Her hair was pulled back into an elegant knot, and her posture was that of a commander reviewing a battlefield.

She walked up the cleared stone path, her heels clicking crisply against the stone.

Gloria stared at her, her jaw slack. "Claire...?"

Darren sneered through his panic, trying to recover his bravado. "Claire! What did you do, you little bitch?! Did you trick the old man into signing some lawyer's papers?!"

Claire stopped two feet in front of Darren. She looked him up and down—the silk shirt, the fake bravado, the trembling chin.

"Hello, Darren," Claire said, her voice dropping like liquid nitrogen. "I told you to give me one week. It’s only been eighteen hours."
