Chapter 6 - Vows Forged in Fire

The ceremony resumed, but the chapel felt transformed. The lingering poison of my family’s arrival had been burned away by the sheer magnitude of reality.
Daniel took both of my hands in his.
I looked into his eyes, and the weight of the four stars, the nomination, the global headlines that were undoubtedly already flashing across CNN, BBC, and the Pentagon press pool—all of it faded into the quiet background.
“Rebecca,” Daniel said, his voice steady, deep, and carrying a quiet resonance that silenced the entire sanctuary. “I did not fall in love with you despite your duty. I fell in love with you because of it.”
A collective stillness settled over the pews.
“I have watched you carry the burdens of thousands of young men and women,” Daniel continued, his eyes holding mine without wavering. “I have seen you sit in the dark of our home, weeping for families you have never met, bearing the grief of a nation on your shoulders without ever asking for comfort or applause. You are the strongest person I have ever known. But more than that, Rebecca, you are the most profoundly tender, fiercely loyal, and beautiful human being on this earth.”
A tear—hot and unbidden—slipped from my right eye, tracking down my cheek.
“You do not need to soften yourself for me,” Daniel whispered, squeezing my hands. “You do not need to lay down your armor to be loved. I will stand beside you against the world, as your partner, your sanctuary, and your home, from this day until my last.”
The Chaplain turned to me. “Rebecca, your vows.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat, letting the deep, iron discipline that had carried me through three decades steady my voice.
“Daniel,” I said, looking directly into his soul. “My whole life has been defined by oaths. I swore an oath to the Constitution. I swore an oath to the Marines under my command. I have kept those oaths with my blood, my mind, and every ounce of strength I possess.”
I lifted my chin slightly, my voice ringing clear and true against the stone walls.
“Those oaths were born of duty. But this oath I make to you is born of absolute, unconditional love. You have given me a peace that no battlefield victory could ever offer. You have loved me in my scars, in my silence, and in my strength. I promise to stand by you, to honor you, to protect your heart as fiercely as I protect this nation, and to love you without reservation, for all the days of my life.”
The Chaplain raised his hands. “By the power vested in me by Almighty God and the United States Navy, I pronounce you husband and wife. Daniel, you may kiss your bride.”
Daniel didn’t hesitate. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against his chest, and kissed me with an intensity and passion that drew a thunderous cheer from the Marines filling the pews.
When he pulled back, his eyes were shining.
He leaned close to my ear. “Ready to face the world, Madame Chairman?”
“Always,” I whispered.
The organist struck the opening chords of the recessional—the thunderous, triumphant triumph of the *Marine Hymn*.
Hand in hand, Daniel and I turned to face the congregation.

And as one, five hundred Marines, foreign dignitaries, cabinet members, and combat veterans rose to their feet once more, their applause crashing against the high vaulted ceiling like the breakers of a stormy sea.
