Chapter 11 - The Midnight Breach

The klaxon was not an ordinary hospital siren; it was a low, guttural wail that vibrated through the floorboards. Instantly, the bedroom lights flickered and switched to red emergency power.

The heavy steel blast shutters on the terrace windows snapped shut with the force of industrial guillotines, locking the estate into total lockdown.

Tomas burst through the heavy bedroom door, a tactical shotgun held across his chest, his radio squawking frantically with overlapping, panicking voices.

"Señora! We have multiple breaches at Gate Three and the service docks!" Tomas barked, his face covered in soot. "They didn't use vehicles—they used speedboats from the coastal inlet! Heavily armed mercenaries! They cut the perimeter fence with thermite charges!"

Victoria’s maternal warmth vanished in less than a heartbeat. Her eyes narrowed into slits of cold, polished granite. She reached into the hollowed-out base of the bedside table lamp, pulling out an automatic pistol with a customized silver slide.

"Who are they?" she demanded coldly, chambering a round with a crisp, lethal snap.

"It's not Arturo Lobo's men," Tomas replied, glancing toward the courtyard where the distant, rhythmic rattle of automatic rifle fire suddenly echoed through the concrete walls. "It's the Santos syndicate from the south harbor. Matteo Lobo didn't just ask for help—he sold them our estate's GPS coordinates and private dock codes in exchange for their backing!"

Victoria let out a chilling, quiet laugh that sent shivers down my spine. "Matteo brought real wolves to my door. How ambitious for a coward."

She turned to me, gripping both of my shoulders with unyielding strength. "Lucia, go with Elena into the panic vault beneath the wine cellar. There is an armored bunker three stories down. Do not open the hatch for anyone except Tomas or me."

"Mom, no," I cried, grabbing her sleeve, the terror of seventeen years ago suddenly rushing back into my throat. "Don't leave me again!"

"I'm not leaving you, Lucia," Victoria whispered, kissing my forehead with the same scent of smoke and iron that had haunted my childhood dreams. "I am finishing what should have been done twenty years ago."

Suddenly, a deafening explosion ripped through the ground floor below us, shaking the entire stone estate to its foundations. Glass shattered somewhere down the hall, followed by the terrifying, unmistakable sound of combat boots marching up the marble staircase.

And then, coming through the intercom speaker on the wall, Matteo’s voice echoed into the room, distorted by the static of a captured guard's radio:

"Lucia! Come out and bring the child! Or we burn the fortress with your mother inside!"
