Chapter 5 - The Digital Inferno

By Wednesday morning, seventy-two hours after Madison had delivered her smug decree, Ashley launched our digital campaign.

We didn't mention Madison. We didn't mention my parents. We didn't mention family drama or petty rivalries. In the world of high-end event planning, true power does not lower itself to mudslinging; it simply outclasses everything in its orbit.

Ashley released a sixty-second cinematic teaser across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.

The video opened with sweeping drone footage of Willow Crest Castle emerging from the morning mist above the Hudson River, scored to a haunting, orchestral reimagining of a classical symphony. The camera swept over the ancient stone ramparts, through the grand arched cloisters, and into the sun-drenched conservatory where thousands of white orchids and cascading ivory wisteria were being meticulously installed.

Then came a breathtaking silhouette: me, standing in Harper Lane’s Soho atelier, the exquisite silk mikado gown catching the golden afternoon light, the twelve-foot train rippling behind me like liquid silver.

The screen faded to black with elegant, minimalist typography:

**A Modern Fairy Tale Wedding.**

**Lauren Campbell & Ryan Sterling.**

**Live at Willow Crest Castle.**

**June 14th.**

The internet did the rest.

Within six hours of posting, the video had crossed two hundred thousand views. By midnight, it had exploded across wedding inspiration boards, luxury lifestyle blogs, and high-fashion TikTok channels.

*1.2 million views.*

*“Who is this bride? She looks like an absolute queen!”*

*“The castle! Is this Willow Crest? I thought they never allowed private weddings there!”*

*“Harper Lane made her gown?! That dress alone costs more than my entire house!”*

*“Setting a reminder for the livestream right now. This is the wedding of the decade.”*

By Thursday morning, major lifestyle publications—*Town & Country*, *Brides*, and *Vogue Runway*—had picked up the story, profiling our upcoming nuptials as a groundbreaking masterclass in live-streamed luxury, highlighting my work as the premier visionary behind the event.

At ten in the morning, my phone began vibrating so violently against my desk that it nearly fell off.

It was the family group chat.

*Madison: WHAT IS THIS???*

*Madison: [Screenshot of Town & Country article]*

*Madison: Lauren, what the hell are you doing?! What is Willow Crest Castle?! You told us you were having a small wedding in Peekskill!*

*Mom: Lauren Campbell, answer your phone right this instant!*

I didn't reply in the chat. Instead, I simply posted the official YouTube Live countdown link, accompanied by a single caption:

*See you all on June 14th. Broadcast begins at 4:00 PM.*

Ten seconds later, my mother called. I answered and put it on speaker so Ryan, Ashley, and Jenna could hear.

"A CASTLE?!" my mother shrieked, her voice reaching an octave I had never heard before. "A LIVE STREAM?! A HARPER LANE GOWN?! Lauren, have you lost your mind?! You cannot upstage your sister like this!"

"Upstage her?" I asked, checking my manicured nails. "Mom, you told me Madison’s wedding was a major society event. You told me mine was just a cute, small party. I simply decided to take your advice and hold a wedding that truly reflected my standards."

"You did this out of spite!" Madison’s voice tore through the speaker, hysterical and breathless. "You knew Julian’s friends would see this! Julian’s mother just called my mother asking why my sister is getting married at Willow Crest with Harper Lane while we’re at Westchester Country Club! She asked if Julian’s family picked the wrong venue! SHE’S TRYING TO STEAL MY SPOTLIGHT!"

"Your spotlight?" I laughed, a cool, melodic sound that drove Madison deeper into madness. "Madison, you booked your wedding on my date. You stole my venue deposit. You stole my grandmother’s inheritance. You took everything you could get your greedy hands on to build your little country club party, and now you’re crying because the world prefers an authentic castle to your stolen beige ballroom?"

"You shut your mouth, Lauren!" my father’s voice boomed through the phone. "You never gave us a chance to fix things! We are your parents! You are humiliating our family on a national stage!"

"You humiliated yourselves the day you decided one daughter was worth everything and the other was worth nothing," I said, my voice dropping into absolute, icy stillness. "You told me my wedding didn't matter. Well, Dad... millions of people seem to disagree."

"Cancel the live stream, Lauren," my mother pleaded, her tone suddenly shifting into a panicked, frantic whine. "Cancel the castle. Move it to Sunday. We’ll come to your wedding on Sunday! We’ll take photos with you! Just don't do this to Madison on Saturday. Her future mother-in-law is threatening to pull their society guests if this turns into an online circus!"

"No, Mom," I said softly, looking at Ryan, who was smiling at me with utter adoration. "I’m not moving my date. I’m not canceling my broadcast. And I’m certainly not saving you from the consequences of your own choices."

"Lauren, please!" Madison sobbed in the background. "Julian says this is tacky! He says your viral video makes our wedding look like an amateur banquet!"

"Then maybe Julian should have spent more time building a real life with you, and less time spending my stolen inheritance," I replied.

Before any of them could respond, I hung up the phone and blocked all three of their numbers.
