Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Deceit

Patricia’s face drained of color, the fake tears evaporating instantly into raw outrage. “Excuse me? You are kicking your own mother out? For this... this ungrateful outsider? After everything I sacrificed to raise you?”
“You threw a heavy ceramic bowl directly at my wife’s head, Mother,” Ethan said with terrifying precision. He kept his hand firmly pressed against my bleeding palm, guiding me gently toward a chair away from the glass. “You assaulted her in her own home.”
“She lied to you!” Nicole shrieked, sliding off the barstool, her phone clutched in her hand. “She’s playing the victim! How can you believe her over your own blood? I am carrying your niece! I have low blood sugar, and she deliberately starved me all afternoon because she’s jealous that I’m having a baby and she’s not!”
The cruelty of Nicole’s words hung in the air, calculated to strike at a wound she thought was unprotected. But I didn't flinch. I reached into my apron pocket with my uninjured hand, pulled out my phone, and unlocked the screen.
“Ethan didn’t need to guess who was lying, Nicole,” I said, my voice steady despite the thrumming pain in my hand. “He watched the entire thing live.”
Patricia scoffed, though her eyes darted nervously. “What nonsense are you babbling about?”
“The kitchen security system,” I replied, nodding toward the discreet, black-domed lens nestled between the crown molding and the top of the pantry cabinet. “The one I installed three weeks ago after my grandmother’s crystal vase mysteriously shattered while I was at work. The one linked directly to an off-site cloud server and mirrored to Ethan’s phone.”
Ethan pulled his phone from his pocket with his left hand, angling the screen toward them. The high-definition wide-angle footage was already queued up. It showed Patricia lifting the bowl over her shoulder, her face twisted in rage, and hurling it with full force straight at my face while I stood completely still by the cutting board. It captured Nicole laughing from the island right up until the ceramic shattered. It recorded every single syllable of Patricia saying, *‘Now look what you made me do.’*
Nicole’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She looked at her mother, who was staring at the small screen as if it were a venomous snake.
“You... you spied on us?” Patricia stammered, shifting instantly from indignant innocence to righteous indignation. “In our own home? That is illegal! That is a violation of privacy!”
“It is not your home,” Ethan said, each word hitting like a hammer. “You sold your condo to pay off your credit card debts, Patricia. You begged me to let you stay here for two weeks while you ‘looked for an apartment.’ That was five months ago. And Nicole showed up because her boyfriend threw her out for cheating on him.”
“Ethan!” Nicole screamed, her face turning crimson. “That is a private matter!”

“You made it our matter when you turned our life into a living hell,” Ethan snapped. “You have thirty minutes to pack what you can carry. If you are not out the door by the time the ambulance arrives to treat Clara’s hand, I will have the police escort you out in handcuffs for felony assault.”
