Chapter 8 - The Testimony of Bone

"Ms. Vance," the prosecutor began, stepping into the well of the courtroom. "Can you tell the court what happened on the morning of October 14th at approximately six o'clock?"
"Julian took my alarm clock off the nightstand," I said, my voice steady, amplified through the courtroom speakers. "He told me that my ninety-day probationary period of pregnancy had failed to produce a compliant disposition."
Kane leaped to his feet. "Objection! Hearsay, inflammatory!"
"This is the defendant’s direct statement to the witness, Your Honor," Wright countered.
"Overruled. Continue, Ms. Vance."
"He told me that Beatrice had prepared the study. When I refused to leave the bed, he gripped my arm, twisted it behind my back, and marched me into the master corridor. Beatrice was waiting with a three-step stepladder and zip-ties."
Silence blanketed the room. Even the reporters in the back gallery stopped their frantic scribbling.
"Describe the hook," Wright said.
"It was a four-inch forged iron utility hook, anchored into the primary wall stud with two three-inch lag screws. Julian installed it three weeks earlier, claiming it was for an antique mirror. He made me stand on the stepladder. He gathered my hair into three sections, braided it tightly around the curved barb of the hook, and secured the base with a heavy zip-tie so I could not pull free without scalping myself."
"And then?"
"He kicked the stepladder away."
A soft gasp rippled through the gallery.
"Did you fall?"
"I couldn't fall," I said, feeling the phantom pain flare across my skull. "If I dropped my weight, the scalp tore. The only way to keep my skin attached to my skull was to stand on my absolute tiptoes. I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant. My belly weighed nearly thirty pounds. Within five minutes, my calves began to cramp violently."
"And what did Beatrice Thorne do during this time?"
"She sat on a folding chair in the hallway with a plastic pitcher of ice water and a ruler. Every time my heels sank half an inch toward the floor, she struck my shins and slapped my face. She said, *'Thorne women carry their burdens with dignity.'* She told me my screaming was vulgar."
"Did you tell them you were in labor?"
"At eight o'clock, my first contraction hit. It was an intense, tearing pain in my lower back. I told Julian the baby was coming. He stood in the doorway, eating an apple, and said: *'She’ll come when I give her permission.'* At nine-fifteen, my water broke. It splashed across his shoes. He became angry because it stained his leather loafers. That’s when Beatrice started hitting me with the shoehorn."
"Your Honor, this is outrageous fiction!" Kane shouted, slamming his legal pad on the table. "There is zero corroboration for these grotesque exaggerations!"
Wright turned toward the clerk. "The state enters into evidence People’s Exhibit 4: the digital audio file retrieved from the scene, cross-referenced with the recovered hard drive footage."
Wright pressed a button on the laptop connected to the courtroom monitors.
The audio hissed, then exploded through the room.
My voice, raw, ragged, animalistic: *"Julian, please! The cord—something’s wrong, she’s not moving! Please untie me!"*
Then the cold, bored drawl of Julian Thorne: *"You should have kept your heels up, Nora. Beatrice, give her another tap. She’s slumping again."*
Then the sound of a sharp slap, followed by Beatrice’s high, shrill cackle: *"Look at her dance, Julian! Like a little puppet on a string! Stand up straight, you worthless sow!"*
Then, the sickening, splintering crash of an axe hitting the front door, followed by Marcus’s thunderous roar: *"POLICE ARE EN ROUTE! STEP AWAY FROM HER!"*
In the courtroom, Beatrice suddenly buried her face in her hands, weeping loudly, while Julian’s mask slipped entirely. His jaw clenched, his eyes bulging with pure, murderous hatred as he stared at me from across the room.
Judge Alvarez leaned forward, her face white with disgust. She looked at Douglas Kane.
"Do you have any further questions regarding 'holistic acupressure,' Mr. Kane?"
May you like
Kane stood frozen, his mouth slightly open. He slowly sat back down. "No, Your Honor."
