Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Execution

At 8:55 AM, Grant stepped off the executive elevator onto the fortieth floor. He was wearing his five-thousand-dollar bespoke suit, exuding an air of forced confidence. He was flanked by his personal attorney, who carried a leather portfolio containing their prepared asset-division claims.
Grant pushed open the heavy double doors of the boardroom, expecting to see a handful of docile board members.
Instead, the room was packed.
Simon Drake sat at the head of the long walnut table. Flanking him were all eleven voting directors, the firm’s chief compliance officers, Marcus Vance, and two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit.
And at the center of the table sat me.
Grant froze on the threshold, the color once again draining from his face. “What is this? This isn't the scheduled agenda.”
“Sit down, Grant,” Simon Drake commanded, his voice cutting through the room like a whip.
Grant swallowed hard, trying to project authority. “Simon, today marks the vesting milestone of my executive equity. If this is an attempt by Claire to create emotional theater regarding our domestic issues—”
“Your equity didn't vest, Grant,” Evelyn interrupted, rising smoothly from her chair. “At 12:01 AM this morning, Claire Vance filed for divorce on grounds of aggravated infidelity, fraud, and corporate embezzlement. The postnuptial covenant is permanently voided.”
Grant turned toward his lawyer, who frantically checked his phone before whispering in horror, “Grant... the docket is live. The vesting clause didn't trigger. It’s over.”
Grant lunged toward the table, slamming his palms onto the wood. “Claire! You can’t do this! I built this company for eight years!”
May you like
“You didn't build it,” Marcus Vance said, tossing a thick dossier in front of him. “You looted twelve million dollars from company reserves to buy penthouses for your mistress. The board has just unanimously voted to terminate you for cause, effective immediately.”
