Chapter 7 - Forensic Unraveling

At precisely ten-thirty, the heavy oak doors of the house opened once more. This time, no one had rung the bell.

Two men in dark, tailored suits walked into the foyer, flanked by a middle-aged woman carrying a heavy leather briefcase. The woman was Victoria Vance-Sterling—no relation to Ethan, but rather the most feared forensic asset attorney in the state, whom I had retained at dawn.

"Claire," Victoria said, giving me a brisk, professional nod. "The injunctions have been filed with the county clerk. The digital preservation order has been served on all local banking institutions."

Behind her stood Detective Marcus Reynolds of the County Financial Fraud Division.

Ethan looked at the badges, then at Victoria, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form words. "Injunctions? Fraud? Claire, this is a civil matter! This is a domestic dispute!"

"It ceased to be a domestic dispute the moment you committed interstate wire fraud, Ethan," Victoria said coolly, stepping forward and opening her briefcase on the dining room table. She laid out a sequence of bank statements, wire transfers, and digital communications stamped with legal audit seals.

"Over the past six months," Victoria stated, addressing the entire room with the mechanical precision of an executioner, "Mr. Ethan Vance unlawfully accessed Ms. Claire Vance’s pre-marital investment accounts via forged digital power-of-attorney documents. He attempted to divert an additional two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into an offshore shell entity registered under his mother’s maiden name."

Camryn gasped, clutching her throat. "That’s a lie! I know nothing about offshore accounts!"

"Your signature is on the corporate registration documents, Mrs. Vance," Detective Reynolds interjected, pulling a notebook from his pocket. "Signed, notarized, and transmitted from your home IP address three weeks ago. Furthermore, the supplemental asset rider you attempted to coerce Ms. Vance into signing today constitutes premeditated grand larceny and real estate fraud under penal code 487."

Olivia let out a ragged sob, collapsing onto the far end of the sofa, burying her face in her hands. "God... oh my God... my father will kill him..."

"Claire, please!" Ethan dropped to his knees before me, completely devoid of pride, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. He reached out, attempting to grasp the hem of my trousers. "Claire, I was desperate! My mother... she was drowning in debt. The family name was all we had left! I made mistakes, horrible mistakes, but I loved you! I swear to God I loved you!"

I looked down at him, feeling neither rage nor sorrow. I felt only the profound, sterile detachment of a scientist observing an insect under a microscope.

"You didn't love me, Ethan," I said, my voice echoing quietly across the grand room. "You loved my credit score. You loved my family’s stability. You loved the idea of using my life as a sacrificial altar to sustain the rotting corpse of your family's vanity."

I stepped back, breaking the proximity.

"Detective Reynolds," I said, turning to the investigator. "The complete, unedited ambient audio recordings documenting the premeditated conspiracy between Mr. Vance and his mother have been transferred to your secure server. Along with the forged mortgage riders."

"Thank you, Ms. Vance," Reynolds said, stepping forward. He produced two pairs of stainless-steel handcuffs. "Ethan Vance, Camryn Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, conspiracy to commit real estate fraud, and identity theft."
