Chapter 4 - The Golden Empire of Shadows

Two years transformed Althea Vance into a myth.
In the global financial capitals of London, New York, and Singapore, whispers circulated about an enigmatic corporate entity known as *The Valerius Group*. Nobody knew who sat at the head of the boardroom table. All they knew was that *Valerius* possessed unlimited liquidity, bought up sovereign debt with ruthless efficiency, and had quietly acquired a controlling forty-two percent stake in Montecillo Maritime Logistics—the core artery of Don Roman’s empire.
Althea operated from a sprawling, fortified estate in the hills overlooking Zurich, surrounded by private security, world-class educators, and pediatric specialists.
Her quadruplets were now two years old.
They were breathtakingly beautiful children, healthy, vibrant, and extraordinarily gifted.
Alexander, now a sturdy toddler with thick, dark waves and sharp features, carried himself with an innate authority. Julian spoke in full, complex sentences, assembling advanced geometric puzzles before breakfast. Cedric possessed an athletic grace that amazed his private gymnastics tutors. And little Seraphina, dressed in custom cashmere dresses, walked through the gardens with the regal grace of a young princess, her brilliant emerald eyes commanding the devotion of everyone who crossed her path.
They knew their mother was their world. They did not know about Christian. They did not know that a billionaire family had tossed them aside for a piece of paper.
One evening, while the children were asleep in their nursery under the watchful eyes of their security detail, Mateo entered Althea’s private office with an embossed gold envelope.
"It has arrived, Madam," Mateo said.
Althea picked up the heavy cardstock.
The Montecillo crest was stamped in pure gold foil at the top:
*Don Roman Montecillo requests the honor of your presence at the Nuptial Union of his son,*
**CHRISTIAN ROMAN MONTECILLO**
*to*
**VANESSA MARIE LAURENT**
*To be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel,*
*Followed by the Grand Coronation Ball at the Montecillo Palace.*
The wedding had been delayed for two years due to international regulatory audits and family restructuring, but now Don Roman was sparing no expense. It was branded by the international press as *The Wedding of the Century*. At this wedding, Don Roman was scheduled to formally sign over thirty percent of the Montecillo family trust to Vanessa’s three boys, naming them the permanent, irrevocable heirs to the entire multi-billion-dollar empire.
The invitation had not been addressed to "Althea."
It was addressed to *The Chairman and Principal Executive Officer of The Valerius Group*.
Don Roman was desperate for Valerius to refinance a massive sixty-million-dollar liquidity deficit that had secretly developed within his shipping empire over the past eighteen months. He had no idea that the mysterious corporate titan holding his debt was the very woman he had dismissed with a twelve-million-dollar check.
Althea ran her thumb over the embossed lettering.
"Has the forensic DNA panel been completed?" she asked.
"Yes, Madam," Mateo replied, placing a silver flash drive and four certified laboratory binders on the desk. "Dr. Thorne and the forensic team from the Swiss Federal Institute executed the tests with double-blind protocols. The results are unequivocal. We have the hospital’s original blood samples, the cord blood samples from Vanessa’s birth, and Christian’s official genetic profile from the family registry."
Althea opened the first binder. She read the conclusion on the final page:
*PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY BETWEEN SUBJECT CHRISTIAN MONTECILLO AND SUBJECTS (TRIPLETS A, B, C): 0.000%*
*TRUE BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY CONFIRMED: SUBJECT JULIAN VANCE / GABRIEL CROSS.*
Althea let out a quiet, chilling laugh.
Vanessa’s triplets were not Christian’s. They were fathered by Gabriel Cross—a notorious corporate saboteur and Christian’s bitterest rival, whom Vanessa had been secretly servicing for five years. Vanessa had used Christian’s drunken stupor during a corporate retreat to engineer the timeline, convincing him that her pregnancy was his miraculous redemption.
Even worse, the second binder contained Christian’s medical records from an elite fertility institute in Munich:
Christian was, and had always been, biologically capable of fathering children—his count had simply been suppressed due to an untreated thyroid toxicity that had resolved during his final year of marriage to Althea.
The quadruplets sleeping upstairs were Christian’s biological flesh and blood. The four children Don Roman had cast into the street were the *only* true heirs to the Montecillo dynasty.
Vanessa’s celebrated triplets were cuckold frauds.
Althea closed the binder with a sharp, decisive thud.
"Mateo," she said, her voice dripping with absolute authority. "Charter the Gulfstream. Prepare my gown. Prepare four custom formal ensembles for Alexander, Julian, Cedric, and Seraphina. And hire a full phalanx of elite private security contractors."
Mateo’s eyes lit with excitement. "What are our orders for the ceremony, Madam?"
Althea stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the alpine night. Her reflection showed a woman of sovereign beauty, terrifying power, and untouchable grace.

"We are going to a wedding, Mateo," she whispered. "And we are going to burn that cathedral to the ground."
