Chapter 2 - Plastic Royalty

Across town at the Savannah Grand Ballroom, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over six hundred members of the coastal elite. The air was thick with the scent of gardenias, expensive perfume, and vintage Dom Pérignon.

At table twelve, Ryan Carter adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo—purchased with Haley’s trust dividends—and smiled at the woman sitting beside him. Serena Hayes looked radiant in an emerald green silk gown that cost more than an average schoolteacher's annual salary. Around her throat sat a collar of brilliant diamonds, catching the light like shards of ice.

"To the executive of the year," Ryan toasted, clinking his crystal flute against Serena's. "To the woman who truly runs the show."

Serena giggled, resting a manicured hand with crimson nails on Ryan's thigh under the white linen table. "You shouldn't say that so loudly, Ryan. People will think Haley is the one doing the real work."

Ryan scoffed, taking a long sip of champagne. "Haley is at home playing the martyr, as usual. Or sitting in some clinic begging for attention. Did you hear her pathetic voice on the phone earlier? 'Ryan, I've been in an accident!' She can't stand that tonight isn't about her. She’s suffocating, Serena. Without my guidance, she’s just an heiress sitting on old money she doesn't know how to multiply."

"Still," Serena purred, leaning closer so her breath tickled his ear, "is everything secure? The transfer? The documents?"

Ryan offered a smirk dripping with unearned confidence. "The notary stamped the last parcel yesterday. By the time Haley realizes the commercial block has been mortgaged, the four million will be completely untraceable. We’ll have the seed capital for the Dubai venture, and she’ll be stuck untangling legal red tape for the next decade. If she files for divorce, half of her liquid assets will be tied up in litigation while we live like kings abroad."

"You're brilliant, baby," Serena murmured, kissing his cheek, leaving a faint crimson imprint near his jawline.

Just then, the waiter approached their table with a silver tray bearing the final bill for the evening's private reserve wine service and the VIP table sponsorship—a modest sum of twenty-four thousand dollars.

Ryan waved his hand dismissively and pulled out his sleek, titanium Centurion card—a card tied directly to the primary treasury account of Carter Real Estate Holdings. "Take care of it. Add a twenty percent gratuity."

"Right away, Mr. Carter," the waiter bowed and retreated.

Serena rested her chin on her hand, gazing at Ryan like a predator admiring its prize. "Tomorrow morning, let's fly out to Miami. Just you and me. Let her sit in that mausoleum of a mansion alone."

"Done," Ryan grinned. "I'll leave a note on the kitchen counter telling her she can reach my attorney if she wants to talk."

Three minutes later, the waiter returned. His posture was no longer deferential; his shoulders were rigid, and the silver tray held the titanium card alongside a small printed slip.

"Excuse me, Mr. Carter," the waiter said quietly, leaning down to avoid drawing the attention of the surrounding guests. "There seems to be an issue."

Ryan frowned, his brow furrowing in irritation. "What kind of issue? Run it again. You probably swiped it incorrectly."

"I attempted the transaction three times, sir," the waiter replied, his voice painfully polite. "The terminal displays a hard decline code. Code 04: 'Pick Up Card - Account Terminated by Primary Holder.'"

A sharp hush seemed to fall over table twelve. Serena's smile vanished instantly.

"What?" Ryan hissed, snatching the card from the tray. "That's impossible! That account has an unlimited credit line!"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Carter," the waiter whispered, his eyes flicking toward the nearby tables where several prominent local developers were glancing over. "Do you have an alternate method of payment? The house requires the table balance settled before the conclusion of the program."

Ryan felt a hot bead of sweat roll down the nape of his neck, cold reality pricking at his bravado. He reached into his leather wallet, pulled out his personal corporate card for Carter Consulting, and shoved it at the waiter. "Use this one."

Two minutes passed. The waiter returned, looking decidedly colder.

"Sir. This card has been flagged for non-sufficient funds and frozen due to suspected administrative fraud."

Serena's face tightened into an ugly mask of panic. "Ryan! What the hell is going on? Everyone is looking at us!"

Ryan’s hands began to shake as he pulled out his phone. He dialed Haley's number with furious, erratic thumb strokes.

A knot of pure dread formed in Ryan's gut. The woman he thought he had outsmarted, the wife he had mocked as weak and desperate from her hospital bed, had just cut the oxygen to his world.
