Chapter 4 - The House of Paper Cards

Inside the central county holding facility, Daniel’s initial arrogance rapidly collided with the unyielding machinery of the penal system. Stripped of his Italian wool suit and gold wristwatch, he was issued orange county garb and relegated to a high-security holding cell. His family attorney, an old country-club associate named Arthur Vance, arrived at the arraignment hearing radiating condescending confidence. Vance approached the bench prepared to offer Daniel's corporate stature and lack of prior felony convictions as grounds for a modest hundred-thousand-dollar bond.

What Vance did not anticipate was the presence of the Assistant District Attorney, Sarah Jenkins—a brilliant former colleague of mine whom I had personally notified through Lena the moment the cuffs were engaged. Jenkins stepped to the podium and dropped a three-hundred-page evidentiary dossier onto the magistrate’s desk with a resounding thud. Attached to the motion for remand without bail were the forensic burn reports, the high-resolution surveillance video captured from the hidden kitchen lens, the newly uncovered life insurance policies, and an emergency financial injunction issued by the state chancery court.

"Your Honor," Jenkins argued, her voice cutting through the hushed courtroom, "the defendant has demonstrated premeditated, depraved indifference to human life. Furthermore, forensic audits conducted within the past twelve hours demonstrate that the defendant has systematically attempted to liquidate his domestic assets and has established unmonitored escrow accounts in the Cayman Islands. He is an acute physical danger to the complaining witness and an extraordinary flight risk."

Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to the defense counsel, and widely known as the most unyielding jurist in the district—leaned over her bench, her gaze boring into Daniel’s trembling form. She did not merely deny bail; she issued an emergency protective order barring both Daniel and his mother from making any contact with me directly or through third parties. When Daniel tried to speak out of turn, protesting that his business operations would collapse without his daily oversight, Judge Vance silenced him with a crack of her gavel, ordering him remanded into custody until the formal preliminary hearing.
