Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The Grand Plaza Auditorium was suffocatingly hot, packed with five hundred investors, journalists, engineers, and socialites.
On the massive digital backdrop, the words **TATUM MERIDIAN: THE NEXT ERA** pulsed in electric blue.
Camden Tatum stood backstage, basking in the energy. He peeked through the curtain, watching the flashbulbs pop as Jasmine Rivers walked to the front row. She was dressed in a striking emerald-green gown, her hair falling in sculptured waves, waving to the photographers as if she had already won an Oscar.
“Two minutes, Mr. Tatum,” the stage manager whispered.
Camden straightened his cuffs, took a deep breath of satisfaction, and adjusted his wireless lapel microphone. Everything was perfect. The investors were seated. The cameras were rolling. The era of Vicki’s quiet, conservative restraint was over.
The auditorium lights dimmed. A sleek video began playing on the giant screens, featuring cinematic shots of server rooms, high-speed fiber optics, and Camden looking thoughtfully out over the city skyline.
The voiceover boomed: *“Innovation requires boldness. It requires shedding the past. Today, Tatum Meridian announces its boldest leap forward.”*
The video cut out. The spotlights flared.
Camden stepped onto the stage to a wave of orchestrated applause. He raised both hands, flashing his trademark million-dollar smile.
“Thank you!” he shouted over the cheers. “Thank you all! Today is not just another quarterly product launch. Today is the day Tatum Meridian rewrites the corporate landscape!”
He paced the stage with fluid, theatrical confidence.
“For the past three years, this company has been constrained by outdated models, conservative risk aversion, and leadership that lacked the courage to conquer global markets. But true vision requires the elimination of dead weight!”
Several people in the front row exchanged uncomfortable glances, clearly remembering his exact use of that phrase the previous evening at the Meridian ballroom.
“Therefore,” Camden declared, pointing grandly toward the front row, “I am thrilled to announce that effective immediately, the Board of Directors has ratified the appointment of our new Chief Executive Officer—Miss Jasmine Rivers!”
The spotlight swung to Jasmine. She stood up, beaming, hands clasped over her heart, preparing to walk up the stage stairs.
The auditorium doors at the back swung open with a resounding crash.
The heavy sound echoed through the hall, cutting through the polite applause. Every head turned toward the central aisle.
Walking down the carpet, flanked by two uniformed officers from the State Financial Crimes Bureau and Arthur Vance, was Vicki Tatum.
She was not limping. She was not crying. Her posture was erect, her strides measured and commanding. She wore no jewelry except for a single antique platinum signet ring bearing the Vance family crest.
Camden froze mid-smile, his mic still live. “What the hell is this?” he muttered, the audio feeding through the house speakers.
Vicki did not shout. She reached the edge of the stage, took a handheld microphone from an astonished audio technician, and stepped up the stairs with absolute calm.

“Good afternoon, Camden,” Vicki’s voice rang out, clear, resonant, and ice-cold through every speaker in the arena. “I believe you forgot to check the board quorum before making your speech.”
