Chapter 6 - Chloe’s Desperation

The realization hit Chloe far sooner than Julian could have anticipated.
It happened outside the pediatrician's office on Friday afternoon. I had just buckled Maya into her car seat in the back of my SUV, the security guard Thomas standing discreetly near the rear bumper, when the sharp click of high heels echoed across the private medical pavilion’s parking garage.
"Elise! Please! Just five minutes!"
I turned around. Chloe stood near the concrete pillar, clutching an oversized designer handbag like a shield. Without the professional stage lighting of the office and her curated corporate outfits, she looked exhausted. The polished, smug woman who had brazenly sent a taunting text message from my husband’s bedside was completely gone. In her place was an anxious twenty-four-year-old girl whose golden ticket had suddenly evaporated.
Thomas stepped forward immediately, his posture shifting into a defensive barrier.
"Stand down, Thomas," I said quietly, keeping my hand firmly on Maya’s car door. "Let her speak."
Chloe stopped three feet away, wringing her manicured hands. "You have to tell Marcus Vance to stop the eviction on the apartment."
I let out a short, incredulous laugh. "Excuse me?"
"The building management served me an immediate three-day notice this morning!" Her voice rose in pitch, shrill and panicked. "They said the corporate lease was terminated due to unauthorized commercial fraud. The security guard wouldn't even let me take my luggage! Everything I own is in that penthouse!"
"That penthouse belongs to Mercer-Sterling Partners, Chloe. And since Julian Mercer no longer has access to company capital, neither do you."
"He told me it was his!" Chloe cried, tears smudging her eyeliner. "He swore the lease was in his personal name! He told me he was worth millions, that he was the sole engine of that firm! He promised that after the anniversary dinner, you would sign an uncontested separation and he’d give me the title to the condo!"
"Julian lied to you," I said evenly, meeting her watery eyes without an ounce of pity. "Julian didn't have millions. He had a generous salary courtesy of my father’s legacy, a line of credit backed by my family's collateral, and an ego far too large for his talent. You thought you were stealing a king, Chloe. You only stole a court jester living on borrowed time."
"I have nothing!" she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "The firm suspended me without pay pending an internal investigation! My professional license could be revoked if they file ethics complaints! Elise, please... I made a mistake! He pursued me! He manipulated me!"
I stepped toward her, stopping inches away so she could hear every quiet, deliberate syllable.
"Six days ago, Chloe, you sent a picture of you lying beside my husband in our bed while my stitches were still healing from childbirth. You didn't feel manipulated then. You felt victorious. You thought you were replacing me."
Chloe shrank back, trembling.
"You wanted his life," I told her coldly. "Now you have him. Take him. Help him pack his boxes at his mother’s apartment. Because as of tomorrow morning, that is all the kingdom he has left."

I turned, stepped into the driver’s seat, and closed the door, leaving her weeping on the oil-stained concrete floor of the garage.
