Chapter 8 - The Gathering Storm

The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity. Eliam hadn’t taken a week off to hide an affair or run away from me. He had taken leave because the six-year covert war to dismantle Uncle Raymond’s empire had reached its endgame. The accountant’s testimony was scheduled for tomorrow, and Eliam had spent the week coordinating protective custody with federal marshals.
"Eliam didn't tell you because Raymond’s associates have been monitoring your communications for years," Clara said, grabbing my hand. "Every phone call, every email. Eliam played the oblivious, overworked corporate husband so Raymond would believe you were entirely unaware and harmless."
"And the medication?" I asked, remembering the pills on the kitchen counter.
"They aren't blood pressure pills," Clara said grimly. "They’re high-dose beta-blockers Eliam was prescribed two weeks ago. He developed a severe cardiac arrhythmia from the stress. He didn't want to worry you with a medical crisis while trying to keep everyone alive."
Shame washed over me in a suffocating wave. While I was suspecting him of infidelity, deceit, and betrayal, Eliam had been carrying the weight of my entire family's survival on his breaking shoulders, poisoning his own health to shield me from a ruthless monster.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway outside the apartment.
Clara froze. The color drained from her face for the second time that night.
"Did someone follow you?" she whispered, pure panic vibrating in her voice.
I thought back to my drive from the house. I had been so consumed by grief and fury that I hadn’t once checked my rearview mirror.
Before I could answer, Clara’s phone buzzed aggressively against the tabletop. The caller ID flashed: *ELIAM*.
I hit speakerphone immediately.

"Clara, get out of the apartment right now!" Eliam’s voice roared through the speaker, ragged with exhaustion and dread. "Raymond found the accountant at St. Jude's an hour ago! They intercepted my car outside our house—they know Evelyn left! They're coming for both of you!"
