Chapter 7 - Forensic Ballistics and Premeditation

At 9:00 AM on the fifth day, Detective Miller and Senior State Trooper Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian) walked into Julian’s metallurgical laboratory. I joined them via an encrypted video link from my hospital room, the screen mounted beside my bed.

Julian did not greet them with pleasantries. He led them directly to the center of the facility, where a scanning electron microscope (SEM) dominated the room like an altar of technical judgment.

"Detectives," Julian said, his voice echoing off the concrete floors. "What you are looking at on this monitor is the fracture surface of the object extracted from Sarah Vance’s T11-T12 intervertebral space."

The image on the large display was terrifying in its mechanical clarity. It looked like a topographic map of a canyon, but the walls of the canyon were unnaturally straight, terminating in a smooth, crystalline plateau that ended in a razor-sharp, jagged edge.

"Notice this smooth, horizontal zone at the root," Julian pointed with a brass stylus. "That is not a fatigue failure. That is an electrical discharge machining trench, four hundred microns deep. It was cut using a high-precision molybdenum wire running an automated CNC cycle."

Trooper Vance leaned in, his brow furrowed. "Explain that in lay terms, Doctor. What does that mean in a courtroom?"

"It means," Julian said, turning to face them, "that this piece of metal was designed to act as a mechanical shear pin. In heavy machinery, a shear pin is designed to break under a specific load to prevent the engine from destroying itself. In this corset, the pin was inverted: it was designed to break inward, toward the body, transforming into a high-tensile spearhead the moment the lacing tension exceeded one hundred pounds per square foot."

"And the force required?" Detective Miller asked, his pen poised over his notebook.

"It was calibrated specifically to the physical capabilities of an adult woman using mechanical leverage," Julian stated. "If a person merely wore this corset, even laced tightly, the stay would hold. But if someone placed a concentrated fulcrum point—such as the heel of a stiletto—directly over the notch and pulled the laces from behind, the bending moment would exceed the ultimate tensile strength of the notched Maraging steel instantly."

"It’s an execution device," Trooper Vance whispered.

"Precisely," Julian agreed. "And here is the final nail."

Julian walked over to an optical comparator and loaded a second specimen—the remaining fragments retrieved from the corset's channel.

"We pulled the microscopic serial number. High-performance aerospace alloys like Maraging 300 are legally tracked from the melt mill to the end user under federal ITAR regulations. The heat-lot number stamped on the un-notched end of this stay corresponds to a five-foot bar sold three months ago by Western Specialized Alloys in Portland."

"Sold to whom?" Miller demanded.

"Aero-Tech Precision Prototypes in Spokane," Julian replied, pulling a printed manifest from a folder and sliding it across the table. "And the purchase order was signed by a machinist named Liam Vance-Cross."

I spoke through the video speaker, my voice cold and clear: "Liam Vance-Cross is the nephew of Dr. Arthur Vance-Cross—Harper’s personal concierge physician. The same doctor who signed the medical certificate claiming I am permanently mentally and physically incapacitated."

Detective Miller looked up at the video camera, his face grim. "She didn't just plan this. She built a syndicate to execute it."

"She’s at her penthouse right now," Trooper Vance said, checking his watch. "Her probate hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at King County Superior Court. She thinks she’s walking in to collect her fifty million."

"No," I said from my hospital bed, my eyes narrowing at the digital schematics on my screen. "Don't arrest her at court. Arrest her where she feels safest. Let her know that the machine she built didn't just fail to kill me—it’s turning around to crush her."
