Chapter 4 - Market Open Shockwaves

At eight-fifty-five, we were back in the Maybach, cruising south across the Golden Gate Bridge through ribbons of morning mist.
At nine o'clock sharp, the New York and Pacific financial tickers updated simultaneously.
My phone didn't just buzz; it screamed. Notifications poured in so rapidly the screen began to stutter.
*Bloomberg:* **MERCER MARITIME ANNOUNCES STRATEGIC MERGER; JULIAN MERCER MARRIES HEIRESS JUNE WHITAKER IN PRIVATE MARIN CEREMONY.**
*San Francisco Chronicle:* **SHOCK AT THE WINERY: WHITAKER SISTER MARRIES TYCOON UNCLE HOURS AFTER ENGAGEMENT COLLAPSE.**
I watched the Mercer Logistics stock price jump four and a half percent in the first three minutes of trading. The rail spur was confirmed. The market saw stability, vast land access, and a ruthless consolidating of power.
Then, my screen flashed with an incoming FaceTime call from Leo.
Julian leaned sideways, his arm resting comfortably along the back of the leather seat behind my head. "Answer it, June. Let's see the nephew pay his respects."
I tapped the green button and flipped the camera to face us both.
Leo’s face appeared, distorted with fury and utter bewilderment. He was sitting on the edge of the master bed at the vineyard estate, his hair disheveled, a wrinkled polo shirt clinging to his chest. In the background, Chloe was sobbing into a silk pillow, her blonde hair tangled like straw.
"June! What the hell is this?!" Leo roared, his voice cracking like a terrified adolescent's. "What did you do?! The press just called my father’s office! Uncle Julian—why the fuck are you sitting next to my fiancé?!"
Julian didn't raise his voice. He didn't even shift his posture. He merely reached over, took my hand, and interlaced our fingers, bringing the colossal sapphire ring directly into the camera's view.
"Watch your language, Leo," Julian said, his baritone dropping to a level that made the car's speakers hum. "You are addressing your aunt."
Leo’s jaw dropped so violently I thought it might detach. He stared at the sapphire, then at Julian’s cold, triumphant gaze, and finally at me.
"Aunt...?" Leo sputtered, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. "June, you can't be serious! You’re doing this to spite me! You threw a tantrum because Chloe and I—it was a mistake, June! We were drunk! You don't marry my fucking uncle!"
"It wasn't a tantrum, Leo," I said, my voice steady, ringing with an icy clarity that surprised even myself. "It was a reorganization of assets. You told me last night that Chloe needed you more than I did. I agreed. So I upgraded."
In the background, Chloe suddenly sat up, her makeup smeared across her cheeks, her eyes bloodshot. "June! How could you do this to our family?! You’re embarrassing Mom! You’re ruining Leo’s standing in the company!"
Julian leaned slightly closer to the lens, cutting Chloe off before she could draw another breath.
"Chloe," Julian said smoothly. "If another word about my wife’s conduct leaves your mouth, I will instruct legal to call the outstanding construction liens on your boutique in Pacific Heights by noon. Have I made myself sufficiently clear?"
Chloe gasped, slapping a hand over her mouth.
"Now," Julian added coldly, "pack your bags and vacate the guest villa at the vineyard by eleven. That property belongs to the maritime trust. Which means, Leo... it belongs to June."
May you like
He reached out and tapped the red button, cutting the call dead.
