Chapter 8 - The Desperate Pilgrimage

By nine o'clock the following morning, the financial and social landscape of Miami had shifted entirely.
The story had exploded across every local and national business outlet. The headlines were brutal:
*“TYCOON BLAKE CAMPBELL REVEALS SECRET MARRIAGE AFTER RESCUING WIFE FROM ASSAULT AT SISTER’S WEDDING.”*
*“VANCE ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT AS CAMPBELL MERIDIAN CALLS IN $40M IN DEBT.”*
*“MONTGOMERY SHIPPING TERMINATES ALL TIES TO DISGRACED VANCE FAMILY.”*
I woke up feeling warm, rested, and completely transformed. The bruises on my collarbone were sore, but the heaviness that had weighed down my soul for two decades had vanished.
Downstairs in the sunlit dining pavilion, Blake was sitting with his tablet, sipping black coffee. When I entered, he stood immediately, walking over to press a soft kiss to my lips.
“How are you feeling, my love?” he asked, pulling out a chair for me.
“Stronger than I’ve ever felt,” I said honestly, looking at the breakfast spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and coffee. “What is the damage?”
Blake smiled—a cold, razor-sharp expression that belonged to the apex predator of the boardroom. “Your father spent the night in the county jail. His bail was set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, which he cannot pay because our legal team filed an emergency injunction freezing all of Vance Enterprises’ operational accounts.”
“And Penelope?”
“Julian’s family locked her out of their condo on Brickell Key. Her bags are sitting on the sidewalk. And right now,” Blake added, looking at his watch, “the three of them are in the lobby of Campbell Tower.”
I raised an eyebrow. “My father is out?”
“His lawyer scraped together collateral for a bail bondsman twenty minutes ago. And instead of going to a hospital or a hideout, he gathered your mother and sister and rushed straight to my headquarters. They are begging for an audience.”
I looked down at my coffee, feeling the final embers of my past flare up.
“Blake,” I said.
“Yes, Clara?”
“I want to go to Campbell Tower. I want to see them.”
Blake’s eyes searched mine for a moment, looking for any sign of hesitation or weakness. Finding none, he nodded slowly.

“Then let us go, Mrs. Campbell. It is time for you to claim what is yours.”
