Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Authority

The word *treason* hung in the stifling air of the ballroom like a toxic vapor.
Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound emerged. His legendary command, his terrifying aura of patriarchal power that had governed our lives with an iron fist, disintegrated into nothingness. The glass of champagne he had been gripping shattered in his palm, the shards cutting deep into his flesh. Blood began to drip down his fingers, spattering the marble in the exact spot where he had spilled mine.
“Julian!” Richard barked, looking desperately over his shoulder for his beloved heir. “Call our chief legal counsel! Call Harrison! Tell him to invoke executive immunity on all primary corporate assets!”
Julian was already curled into a fetal position behind the mahogany grand piano, his bespoke tuxedo jacket covered in lint and dust. He was trembling so violently that he could barely keep his hands on his phone. “Dad... Harrison isn’t answering!” Julian wailed, his voice cracking into the pathetic whine of a terrified child. “His secretary told me the feds took him out of his penthouse in handcuffs an hour ago! Dad, they have everything! They have the Cayman manifests! They have the dead accounts!”
Eleanor Waverly rushed toward Agent Vance, her manicured fingers clawing at the air, her face twisted in a grotesque parody of wounded elegance. “This is an outrage! You cannot treat us like common street criminals! Look at these people! These are the founding families of this state! We have rights! We have constitutional protections!”
Agent Vance didn't even look at her. He made a subtle motion with his index finger. Two female federal agents stepped forward, seizing Eleanor by her frail, diamond-encrusted wrists.
*Click. Snap.*
The cold steel of handcuffs snapped tightly around her wrists, forcing her hands behind her back.
Eleanor let out a blood-curdling shriek as the cold metal pinched her flesh. “Richard! Do something! They’re putting chains on me! Look at what they’re doing to my dress!”
“Eleanor Waverly,” an agent recited with mechanical indifference, “you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
Around them, the seventy wealthy guests were being herded toward the walls by armed agents. Federal clerks were already setting up portable scanning equipment on the banquet tables, methodically confiscating every phone, tablet, and briefcase in the room. The grand social event of the Atlanta season had been converted into a high-security federal processing cage.
“Who did this?” Richard growled, his voice dropping into a guttural, venomous rasp as agents grabbed his arms and forced him down toward the cold floor. “Who gave you access to the Cayman encryption keys? Those files were stored on a private air-gapped server in my personal study! Nobody had the master passphrases! Nobody!”
Agent Vance permitted himself a thin, razor-sharp smile. He glanced toward the shadowed service corridor on the eastern wing of the ballroom.

“Your security architecture was indeed flawless, Mr. Waverly,” Vance said quietly. “Too bad the person who designed it decided to turn state’s evidence.”
