Chapter 5 - The Voice Beneath the Concrete

Marcus tapped his tablet, routing the signal directly into the mansion’s state-of-the-art audiovisual entertainment system.
The massive eighty-inch screen mounted above the ballroom fireplace flickered to life.
"While you two were drinking champagne," Marcus announced to the room, "our team breached your wine cellar. We found the loose baseboard behind the cast-iron radiator. And we recovered the digital audio chip."
Tessa, clutching her bloody mouth on the hearth, looked at the screen with sheer horror. "No... that's impossible. We searched her!"
"You searched an eight-year-old girl," Nia said coldly. "You didn't realize who trained her."
Marcus hit the execute command.
The high-definition speakers in the ceiling crackled, and then the sound of metal scraping against concrete echoed through the room.
The voice that came through was loud, clear, and sickeningly recognizable:
*“Hold her legs down, Tessa! Stop squirming, you ungrateful little brat!”*
*“No! Aunt Tessa, please! I won't say it! Mom loves me! Mom is coming back!”*
*“Your mother is nobody! She’s a pathetic little paper-pusher who abandoned you in Africa! Now look at the camera and say she neglected you!”*
*“No! Mom! MOMMY!”*
Then came the dull, sickening thud of heavy steel striking bone, followed by an eight-year-old child’s blood-curdling scream of pure agony.
In the ballroom, several women began weeping openly. Men turned their faces away from the screen in sheer disgust and horror. The Deputy Mayor, who had tried to intervene earlier, stared at Tessa and Morgan with raw revulsion.
The recording continued:
*“Look at that, Tessa. Her arm is bent backwards. That'll teach her to disobey.”*
*“Shut her up, Morgan! Put the rag in her mouth before the neighbors hear! If she doesn't sign the statement, we'll tell the police she tripped down the concrete stairs. Keith already knows what to do.”*
*“And what about Nia when she comes home?”*
*“Let that stupid clerk come home. When she walks through the door to sign the funeral or custody papers, we’ll deal with her too. She doesn't have the guts or the brains to fight us.”*
The audio file clicked off.
Silence—thick, suffocating, and terrifying—descended upon the grand hall of Vance Manor.
Nia looked down at Morgan, who was trembling violently beneath her boot, tears of genuine terror finally spilling down her face.
Tessa was curled into a ball by the fireplace, her pristine society facade completely obliterated.
"Eleven fractures," Nia said, her voice dropping into a register that made even the battle-hardened Cole straighten his spine. "You took turns breaking an eight-year-old child because she loved her mother too much to lie."
"Please..." Morgan choked out, her arrogance entirely gone. "Please, Nia... we're family... we can give you money... whatever you want... millions..."
Nia leaned down, her face inches from Morgan’s ear.
"I don't want your money, Morgan. I am going to take your freedom, your name, your pride, and every single cent you ever hoarded. And when you are sitting in a federal penitentiary for the next twenty-five years, you will remember every single blow you struck against my daughter."

Outside, the wail of sirens began echoing up the winding driveway.
