Chapter 8 - Boarding Day

The Royal Promenade Suite on Deck Eight was everything Lillian had dreamed of, and she made sure everyone within earshot knew it.

Within an hour of boarding, she had summoned the floor steward three times. First, because the complimentary champagne was French Brut rather than pink vintage; second, because the orchids on the dining table were white instead of lavender; and third, because she demanded that their luggage be unpacked immediately by the housekeeping staff.

"Do you know who we are?" Lillian snapped at the young stewardess, a polite girl named Chloe whose eyes were wide with stress. "My husband is a senior executive partner. When we ask for extra caviar during afternoon tea, we don't expect to wait fifteen minutes! Get the head purser up here right now!"

"I am so sorry, ma'am," Chloe stammered, smoothing her apron. "The purser is currently attending an executive briefing with the line’s new managing partner."

"I don't care about your new partner!" Lillian shrieked, slamming her purse onto the marble console. "Tell the purser that Lillian Vance in suite eight-zero-four demands his presence, or I will have him fired before this boat reaches England!"

Daniel stood on the private balcony, gripping the teak railing, staring out at the receding American coastline. His stomach was twisted into knots. The grandeur of the ship—the crystal chandeliers, the sweeping grand staircase, the tuxedo-clad string quartet playing in the atrium—only heightened his terror. Every time he heard a steward's footsteps, he imagined it was the police coming to arrest him for the forged credit line.

"Lillian, please," Daniel pleaded, turning back into the room. "Lower your voice. We’re on the ship. We got what you wanted. Stop antagonizing the staff."

"Oh, shut up, Daniel!" Lillian scoffed, admiring her reflection in the gilded mirrors as she touched up her lipstick. "You act like a scared little boy. We paid for this suite—"

"We *borrowed* for this suite!" Daniel hissed, stepping closer. "We are twenty-five thousand dollars in the hole! If my boss finds out I pledged my future performance bonus, I could lose my job!"

"He won't find out," Lillian said dismissively, waving her hand. "Tonight is the Captain’s Welcome Gala in the Golden Compass Lounge. Brenda and Sarah are sitting at a standard table on the lower deck. We have an invitation to the VIP mezzanine. When they see me drinking champagne with the line’s directors, they will be dying of jealousy. Now go put on your tuxedo and make yourself look like a man of means."

Daniel looked at his wife—the hard, unyielding vanity in her eyes, the complete absence of warmth or remorse. For the first time in years, the fog of infatuation cleared from his mind, replaced by a cold, sickening clarity.

He thought of his mother. He remembered the small, fragile frame of the woman who had spent forty years sacrificing every comfort so he could go to college, wear warm coats in winter, and start his career without debt. He remembered the sound of her small cardboard box hitting the wet pavement as he closed the door on her.

*What have I done?* he thought, his chest tightening until he could barely breathe.

"Daniel! Move!" Lillian barked.

May you like

Numbly, Daniel picked up his dinner jacket and walked into the dressing room.
