Chapter 7 - The Feral King

For three seconds, Adrian did not breathe.

Then, the animal took over.

He lunged.

He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the federal agents walking down the center aisle. He didn't care about the four hundred witnesses or the priest who threw himself sideways to avoid the collision.

His face was contorted into an ugly, foaming snarl. His hands, fingers curved into talons, reached straight for my throat.

“I’ll kill you!” he screamed, his voice breaking into a jagged, primal screech that didn't sound human. “I’ll tear your throat out right here! I’ll kill you with my bare hands!”

I didn't run.

For two years, my instinct had been to drop to my knees, to tuck my chin, to protect my vital organs while his blows rained down. My instinct had been survival through submission.

Not today.

I stood my ground, my spine straight, my chin raised, meeting his murderous charge with eyes as cold as black ice.

Before Adrian’s fingers could touch the skin of my collarbone, two hundred and twenty pounds of off-duty state trooper struck him from the left.

The impact sounded like a car door slamming shut.

Adrian went flying across the marble platform, his body crashing hard into the heavy brass baptismal font. The heavy basin tipped with a deafening, metallic crash, spilling consecrated water across the altar steps and soaking the hem of my abandoned wedding gown.

Adrian scrambled on his hands and knees, sputtering water, his slicked-back hair falling over his wild, bloodshot eyes. “Get off me!” he shrieked, kicking wildly at the two officers pinning him to the floor. “Do you know who I am? I am Adrian Blackwell! I’ll have your badges! I’ll buy your entire department and burn it to the ground!”

“Adrian Blackwell,” a calm, gravelly voice echoed through the microphone that still sat live on the pulpit.

Special Agent Miller stepped onto the altar, his badge gleaming in the overhead chandeliers. He held a thick stack of papers bound in a blue legal folder.

“You are under arrest for the murder of Marcus Vance, for federal securities fraud, corporate espionage, and witness intimidation. You have the right to remain silent.”

“Let me go!” Adrian bellowed, thrashing against the cold stone, his expensive tuxedo tearing along the shoulder seam. “Mother! Call Donald! Call the governor! Call him right now!”

Vanessa didn't call anyone.

She sat in the front pew, staring blankly ahead, her mouth open in a soundless wail. Two female federal agents had already taken positions on either side of her, their hands resting lightly on their duty belts.

“Vanessa Blackwell,” one of the agents said, her tone professional and flat. “You are also being detained as a material witness and co-conspirator in the fraudulent transfer of Horizon Energy assets. Please stand up and keep your hands visible.”

A guest in the fourth row—the CEO of the city’s largest commercial bank—stood up abruptly, pulled his wife by the arm, and began hurrying down the side aisle toward the exit without looking back.

Within seconds, the dam broke.

The sanctuary erupted into pandemonium. Socialites scrambled over their own silk trains to reach the doors. High-powered attorneys pulled out their phones, shouting orders to their junior partners to scrub all references to the Blackwell merger from their corporate registries. Photographers who had been hired to capture a society wedding were standing on pews, their flashes strobing like lightning across the chaos, capturing Adrian being dragged down the marble steps on his belly.

The spectacle was complete.
