Chapter 5 - Thirty-Eight Missed Calls

By one in the afternoon, the notification counter on my phone displayed thirty-eight missed calls, fourteen voicemails, and twenty-two text messages.

Arthur hooked my phone up to the conference room audio system so that Hayes could document the communications for our pending protective order and divorce petition. We sat together, the silence of the room punctuated only by the mechanical beep of the voicemail player.

*Beep.*

"David! What the hell is wrong with my card?! I’m at the boutique and the supplier from Milan is on the phone threatening to cancel our fall shipment! Call the bank right now and fix this! You are humiliating me!"

*(Time: 8:14 AM)*

*Beep.*

"David, pick up the damn phone! The point-of-sale terminal isn't working! A client was trying to buy three evening gowns and the machine declined every single authorization! Call me back immediately!"

*(Time: 8:42 AM)*

*Beep.*

"David? Why is the SUV gone? Where did you leave it? I had to take an Uber to work and the driver was disgusting. What did you do to the accounts? This isn't funny anymore. If you're trying to punish me for yesterday, you've made your point. Call me."

*(Time: 9:15 AM)*

*Beep.*

"David! The landlord just walked into my store with two security guards! He handed me an eviction warning! He says you withdrew your guarantee! You can't do that! That’s illegal! We're married, everything you have belongs to both of us! Pick up the phone, David! PICK UP THE PHONE!"

*(Time: 10:03 AM)*

*Beep.*

The tone in the eighth message changed. The arrogant fury had begun to fray around the edges, exposing the frantic, cornered animal underneath.

"David... please. Please answer. Julian is here and he says our personal credit line is frozen too. The vendors are calling non-stop. They’re saying there’s a freeze order from First National. Did you do this? Why would you do this to me? We can talk about your mother, okay? We can talk about her! I’ll apologize! I’ll buy her flowers! Just call the bank and unlock the accounts, I’m begging you!"

*(Time: 11:20 AM)*

*Beep.*

By the thirty-eighth call at twelve-forty-eight, Vanessa was sobbing hysterically, her voice broken and ragged.

"David... the police were just here. A detective named Miller. He asked questions about your mother’s account. He took my personal laptop and the store ledger. David, what did you tell them?! You're going to destroy my life! Everything I worked for! Please, David... where are you? Where are you?!"

*(Time: 12:48 PM)*

Hayes paused the recording. The silence in the conference room was total.

"Notice how not once," Hayes pointed out calmly, "did she ask if your mother made it to her appointment safely. Not once did she ask how Evelyn was doing. Her entire world begins and ends with her image and her stolen lifestyle."

"She thinks this is a negotiation," I said.

"It isn't," Arthur said, sliding a thick manila folder across the table to me. "She just arrived downstairs in the lobby. Building security notified me two minutes ago. She's causing a scene, demanding to be let up to my office."

I stood up, buttoned my suit jacket, and took a deep breath.

"Let her come up," I said. "It’s time she meets the man she actually married."
