Chapter 7 - Structural Failure

Brandon broke.
He did not fight. He did not stand his ground. He turned and sprinted toward the far exit corridor, knocking over an empty IV pole that clattered violently against the tiled floor.
He never made it to the fire doors.
A squad of four state troopers in broad-brimmed hats and grey tactical uniforms emerged from the elevator lobby, weapons drawn, taser leads already leveled.
"Brandon Cole! Down on the floor! Hands behind your head! Down!"
Brandon hesitated for a fraction of a second, his fists balling up, before a state trooper’s boot swept his legs out from under him. He hit the floor with a heavy, humiliating *thud*, his designer suit jacket tearing at the seams as two troopers drove their knees into his shoulder blades and clicked steel handcuffs over his wrists.
"I’m Brandon Cole!" he shrieked, his cheek pressed flat against the floor, spitting saliva onto the wax. "My mother is the Commissioner! You can't touch me! You’re dead! All of you are dead!"
"Shut your mouth," the lead investigator, Special Agent Sarah Chen, stated coldly, stepping past him into Room 412. She showed her badge to Dr. Reyes and me. "Mrs. Vance? Mrs. Emily Cole?"
"We are here, Agent Chen," I said, stepping beside my daughter’s wheelchair.
"The State Attorney General’s Office has taken over primary jurisdiction under the Emergency Public Corruption and Violent Crimes Act," Agent Chen said, her eyes shifting to Emily’s external fixator with deep professional sympathy. "We have secured Noah. He is currently at the Child Protection Advocacy Center under the personal guard of two of our female plainclothes investigators. He is safe, fed, and asking for his grandmother."
Emily let out a ragged, sob-choked breath, burying her face in her hands. The terror that had sustained her upright posture finally broke, giving way to the pure, overwhelming relief of a mother whose child is out of the predator’s reach.
"Agent Chen," I said, pointing down to my briefcase on the table. "You have the primary assault evidence and the corruption manifests regarding the Westside High School Gymnasium. But there is a secondary critical failure that requires immediate physical intervention."
Agent Chen leaned in. "What failure?"
"The high school gymnasium," I said, my voice hardening. "The structural calculations I ran two hours ago confirm that the primary roof trusses were anchored using Brandon’s fraudulent low-grade cement mix. That concrete was poured twelve days ago. Today is Monday. The curing cycle reaches its critical thermal-shrinkage stress point at approximately eighty-four hours post-pour."
Agent Chen’s brow furrowed. "Explain that in plain English, Mrs. Vance."
"Today is the scheduled ribbon-cutting for the new gym annex," I said. "Three hundred high school students and the entire school district faculty are scheduled to pack the bleachers at 9:00 AM for the morning assembly. That roof is not load-bearing. It is a guillotine waiting for the ambient temperature to drop."
Agent Chen checked her tactical watch. It was 7:32 AM.

"Mother of God," she whispered.
