Chapter 8 - The Ambush at Old Highway 21

The morning mist hung low over the dense North Carolina pine trees, clinging to the black asphalt of Old Highway 21 like a ghost.
At 0815 hours, an unmarked white Ford transport van navigated the twisting curves of the rural highway. To any observer, it looked like a low-priority state prisoner transport vehicle.
Inside the back of the van, there were no patients.
I sat strapped into the jump seat, wearing full tactical gear: an olive-drab plate carrier, Kevlar helmet, and an M4 carbine resting across my knees. Sitting across from me were Master Sergeant Jackson and Sergeant First Class Ruiz—two combat veterans from my headquarters security detachment who had accompanied me on three separate tours in Kandahar.
Through our tactical headsets, Captain Miller’s voice crackled from the airborne surveillance drone orbiting two thousand feet above the cloud layer.
*"Vanguard One, this is Eye in the Sky. Two hostile vehicles detected approaching your rear at high speed. A black Ford F-350 with reinforced steel bull-bars, followed by a dark blue Dodge Ram. Speed eighty-five miles per hour. Distance four hundred meters."*
"Copy, Eye in the Sky," I replied evenly. "Hold speed. Maintain lane discipline. Let them initiate."
Ruiz racked the bolt of his shotgun with a sharp, metallic *clack*. Jackson adjusted his night-vision mount, his face completely expressionless beneath his helmet.
Through the van's reinforced rear tinted windows, the massive grille of the Ford F-350 materialized out of the fog like a predatory shark.
*"Contact in five... four... three..."*
**BANG.**
The F-350 slammed violently into the rear bumper of our transport van. The kinetic shock shuddered through the chassis, but our military-grade run-flat tires and reinforced leaf springs held the road.
The pickup surged forward again, pulling alongside our driver’s side. The tinted passenger window of the truck rolled down, revealing a masked man holding a twelve-gauge shotgun.
"Pit maneuver!" Jackson shouted as our driver slammed on the heavy ceramic brakes.
The transport van slowed instantly, causing the pursuing F-350 to overshoot our position. The driver of the truck, realizing he had lost momentum, swerved sharply across the road, slamming his vehicle horizontally across both lanes to create a roadblock.
The secondary vehicle—the blue Dodge Ram—screeched to a halt behind us, boxing our van in completely.
Doors flew open. Four armed men in black tactical gear and balaclavas spilled out of the pickup trucks, raising automatic weapons.
And stepping out of the passenger side of the Dodge Ram, wearing an expensive leather jacket and holding a silver semi-automatic pistol with an unsteady hand, was Nicholas Ferguson.
His face was contorted with frantic, psychotic excitement.
"Get her out!" Nicholas screamed to his hired muscle. "Drag her out of that fucking van!"
"Vanguard One, execute," I commanded into my radio.
The rear double doors of the transport van kicked open with explosive force.
Before the mercenaries could register what was happening, Jackson threw two flashbang grenades into the gap between the vehicles.
**CRACK-BANG! CRACK-BANG!**
Two blinding spheres of magnesium light and deafening 170-decibel shockwaves detonated simultaneously. The hired mercenaries staggered backward, clutching their ears and dropping their weapons in total sensory disorientation.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
From the tree lines flanking the highway, the roar of dozens of diesel engines erupted. Four armored BearCat vehicles belonging to the FBI Tactical Support Unit smashed through the underbrush, completely barricading the road. Fifty heavily armed federal agents emerged from the forest with assault rifles drawn, laser sights cutting through the smoke.
The mercenaries immediately dropped to the asphalt, hands behind their heads, realizing they had walked into a professional ambush.
Nicholas Ferguson, however, was too blind with madness to comprehend the reality.
He raised his silver pistol, aiming directly at the transport van door. "Abigail! I'll kill you! I swear to God I'll—"
I leaped down from the van bed.
In one fluid, seamless movement, I deflected the barrel of his pistol upward with my forearm. The weapon discharged harmlessly into the morning sky.
Before Nicholas could pull the trigger a second time, I drove my palm upward into his nose.
The sound of cartilage crunching was loud and immediate. Nicholas shrieked in agony, dropping the pistol onto the road as he clutched his shattered face.
I didn't stop. I caught him by the lapels of his designer leather jacket, spun him around, and slammed his body facedown onto the hood of his own luxury truck. The metal dented beneath the impact.
I twisted his right arm behind his back, driving my knee firmly into the center of his spine, pinning him to the hot engine hood.
"Rachel! Please! Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Nicholas sobbed, blood pouring from his broken nose across the blue paint. "It wasn't my idea! It was my mother! She hired them! She told me to do it!"
Special Agent Vance walked up, his service weapon lowered, shaking his head with profound disgust.
"Nicholas Ferguson," Vance announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, interstate transportation of firearms in commission of a felony, and federal witness tampering."
Vance snapped the cuffs onto Nicholas’s wrists, pulling him off the hood.
Nicholas looked at me, his eyes wild with terror, snot and blood dripping down his chin. "You set me up! You set me up!"
I took off my tactical helmet, staring down at the miserable, broken creature before me.
"I didn't set you up, Nicholas," I said, my voice steady as stone. "You set yourself up the moment you mistook my daughter's gentle nature for weakness. And you made the fatal mistake of forgetting who her mother was."
As the federal marshals dragged Nicholas toward the waiting transport vehicle, his screams of panic faded into the morning air.
I pulled my radio from my vest.
"Miller," I spoke into the mic.
*"Go ahead, Colonel."*
"Execute the second warrant. Pick up Patricia and Gregory."
May you like
*"Understood, ma'am. CID and federal agents are entering the estate right now."*
