Chapter 3 - The First Ledger

By noon, the estate had settled into its customary rhythm of lazy luxury. Or so they thought.

I walked down the grand curved staircase into the main drawing room. Eleanor was seated near the arched French windows, sipping a dry martini while reviewing color swatches for an upcoming charity gala. Chloe was lounging on an antique chaise lounge, scrolling through an online luxury retailer on her tablet, a half-eaten croissant resting on a silver platter beside her.

Arthur was standing by the wet bar, pouring himself a bourbon. When he heard my footsteps, he turned, his expression tightening into an arrogant smirk.

"Look who decided to rejoin reality," Arthur said, taking a sip from his glass. "I see you changed. Good. My mother was appalled by your attitude this morning. You’re going to sit down, apologize to Chloe, and then you’re going to call your office and submit your resignation. From now on, you don't work unless I personally approve the contract."

I didn't answer him. I walked past the wet bar to the central coffee table and picked up my personal tablet that had been charging there.

Chloe didn't even look up from her screen. "Arthur, tell her to make me another pot of coffee. And tell her to make sure it’s hot this time. The maid won't be back until tomorrow, and I’m trying to order this limited-edition handbag before the trunk show closes."

"You heard my sister," Arthur commanded, stepping closer to me. "Diana, I won't tell you again."

Before I could speak, Chloe let out an irritated gasp.

"What is wrong with this stupid Wi-Fi?" Chloe muttered, tapping the screen aggressively. "The transaction failed. It says my card is declined."

Arthur chuckled dismissively. "You probably mistyped the expiration date again, Chloe. You did that last month."

"I didn't mistyped anything!" Chloe snapped, her voice rising. "I used the Vance corporate card. The one Father authorized for my personal expenses. It’s got an unlimited ceiling."

She tapped the screen again. A sharp red banner flashed across her screen.

At that moment, the double doors of Richard Vance’s private study swung open with a resounding crash.

Richard stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his face the color of wet chalk. In his trembling hands, he held a stack of legal documents that had just been transmitted via high-speed facsimile and electronic courier.

"Arthur," Richard whispered. His voice was hoarse, entirely stripped of the casual authority he usually carried. "Arthur, get in here right now."

Eleanor set her martini glass down with a delicate frown. "Richard, darling, what is the meaning of this shouting? You know I despise raised voices before lunch."

"Be quiet, Eleanor!" Richard barked.

The room went dead silent. Richard had never, in thirty years of marriage, spoken to Eleanor in that tone.

Arthur put his bourbon glass down, his brow furrowing with sudden concern. "Dad? What's going on? Is there an issue with the marina development?"

"The marina development is the least of our concerns," Richard stammered, his fingers rustling the papers as his body shook. "Our operating accounts... Northern Trust just shut down our clearing channels. Apex Capital has recalled our secondary lines. And this... this notice just arrived from the legal representatives of Sterling Horizon Capital."

Arthur blinked, clearly failing to grasp the gravity of the words. "Sterling Horizon? That’s the private fund that holds our restructuring note. Why are you sweating over them? We don't have a payment due for another three months."

"They’ve accelerated the debt," Richard choked out, tears of genuine terror welling in his aged eyes. "The entire principal balance. Sixty-two million, four hundred thousand dollars. Due immediately."

"They can't do that!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking. "That’s illegal! We have a five-year term!"

"They can do it if there is a breach of the moral conduct covenant!" Richard screamed back, slamming the papers onto the mahogany table. "Clause Fourteen! Any act of gross misconduct, physical violence, or reputational jeopardy committed by a primary officer or immediate beneficiary of the Vance family triggers immediate default! Richard, Arthur... what the hell did you do?!"

Arthur’s gaze darted around the room, wild, unmoored, and panicked. Then, his eyes locked onto me.

I stood by the window, my arms loosely crossed, my posture serene.

"You," Arthur breathed, his voice dropping to a horrifying whisper. "You said something to the bank."

"No, Arthur," I said, my voice echoing clearly against the high ceilings. "I didn't say anything to the bank. My lawyers did."

Eleanor stood up slowly, her polished exterior beginning to fray. "Diana, what are you talking about? What could an ordinary consultant possibly have to do with Sterling Horizon Capital?"

I picked up my tablet, tapped the screen once, and turned it toward them.

Displayed on the high-resolution screen was the certified corporate charter of Sterling Horizon Capital, officially registered with the state commerce commission.

The silence that descended upon the room was no longer just heavy; it was apocalyptic.
