Chapter 8 - The Gala Ambush

The Grand Marquis Ballroom was a sea of black-tie opulence, flashing strobes, and vanity.

Over five hundred top-tier digital creators, media executives, and lifestyle influencers milled around an eighty-foot LED runway stage. High-end robotic camera jibs swept across the crowd, broadcasting the *Apex Digital Creator Gala* to a global audience across four streaming platforms.

At the center of the VIP lounge sat Cresa.

She wore a custom, emerald-green velvet evening gown, her hair sculpted into immaculate Hollywood waves. Her face was painted to porcelain perfection, masking any trace of the screaming match that had occurred three hours earlier. Declan stood beside her in an Italian tuxedo, though his eyes darted constantly toward the entrance, his jaw clenching every time an executive walked past without greeting him.

At the perimeter of the room, disguised as ballroom catering staff and private security personnel, eight armed federal agents took their positions.

I stepped through the heavy double doors of the ballroom.

I wore a minimalist, floor-length midnight-blue gown. The contrast was deliberate and brutal: my posture was straight, my head held high, and the thick, medical-grade dressing covering the left side of my face was entirely exposed. The black surgical stitches trailing down toward my jawline were plainly visible beneath the edge of the gauze.

The chatter near the entrance died instantly.

A young fashion vlogger with a handheld gimbal turned her camera toward me, her eyes widening. “Wait... isn’t that Cresa’s sister? The one from the wedding video?”

Whispers rippled through the crowd like a domino effect. The sea of influencers parted as I walked slowly, deliberately down the center aisle straight toward the VIP elevated platform.

Cresa saw me first. Her champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor. The sound cracked through the ambient house music like a pistol shot.

“Maeve?” she gasped, her face draining of all color. “What... what are you doing here? Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s mentally unstable!”

Declan lunged forward, his face twisting into a mask of pure, murderous rage. “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing up here, you pathetic little—”

Before he could take two steps, I pulled the wireless microphone from my evening clutch and turned the switch to *ON*.

The audio didn't just route through a local speaker. Agent Miller’s team had hacked directly into the Grand Marquis’s master audio matrix and the live satellite outbound stream. My voice boomed through the ballroom with the force of an avalanche:

“Good evening, everyone,” I said, my voice completely devoid of fear. “I believe my sister Cresa and her husband Declan were about to present a keynote on ‘Authentic Digital Storytelling.’”

The giant eighty-foot LED screen behind the main stage flickered.

The glittering corporate graphics vanished. In their place, twenty-foot-high, crystalline 4K footage filled the arena.

It wasn't the edited social media clip. It was the raw, uncompressed feed from Declan’s private satellite truck.

The screen zoomed in on Cresa’s face right before the shove. In pristine, multi-channel audio, her whispering voice echoed through the massive venue: *“Push her hard on three. The European betting pool closes in ten seconds. Make sure she hits the spike.”*

Then came the impact. The deafening shatter of glass.

And then, the screen split. On the right side, the FBI forensic report was projected for the world to see: the chemical analysis of the biological neurotoxin, the forged commercial deeds, the bank statements showing millions flowing through offshore accounts, and the high-resolution photograph of the blackened, two-inch steel spike extracted from my flesh.

A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the air out of the ballroom.

Cresa fell backward onto the leather sofa, hyperventilating, her hands clawing at her emerald gown. “Turn it off! Declan, turn it off! It’s fake! It’s AI-generated!”

Declan made a desperate sprint toward the backstage exit.

He didn't make it five yards.

Two catering servers in black waistcoats dropped their serving trays, drew their concealed Glock 19s, and tackled Declan to the marble floor with bone-crushing force.
