Chapter 11 - The Perimeter Breach

We touched down at Forward Operating Base Falcon in Jordan just as the desert sun broke over the horizon, painting the sand dunes in brilliant streaks of gold and crimson.

The airfield was locked down under maximum security. As soon as the Valkyrie came to a stop, two surgical teams swarmed the rear ramp, wheeling the wounded operators directly into waiting armored ambulances.

General Vance himself was standing on the tarmac, his service cap pulled low against the desert wind. He didn't say a word as I walked down the ramp; he simply stepped forward, took my hand in both of his, and nodded—a silent gesture of profound, unshakeable respect that no medal could ever capture.

By the time I showered, had the laceration on my forehead stitched by a flight surgeon, and changed into a clean flight suit, it was midday.

I was escorted into the base’s Tactical Operations Center for the mission debrief. Colonel Sterling was patched in via secure holographic video link from Fort Bragg.

"The President has personally signed off on the operational summary, Hayes," Sterling said, his image flickering slightly over the encrypted satellite beam. "The Valkyrie’s systems outperformed every benchmark. But that’s not why I’m calling you right now."

Sterling glanced at General Vance, who stood beside the primary tactical display table with an expression of sudden, intense gravity.

"Twenty minutes ago," Vance said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register, "an unauthorized civilian chartered jet breached the restricted security corridor over Buckley Space Force Base in Colorado, claiming an emergency transponder code registered under your family’s corporate trust."

My blood ran cold. "My father?"

"Not your father," Vance replied, tapping the holographic console.

The screen flickered, displaying a live surveillance feed from a secure interrogation room back in Colorado. Sitting at the metal table, in handcuffs, was my brother, Richard. His expensive designer suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild with terror.

"Richard was arrested trying to access your classified personnel housing unit," Vance continued. "He wasn't there to apologize, Lauren. When the FBI searched his vehicle, they found encrypted flash drives containing stolen schematics of the Valkyrie’s propulsion system. Your father didn't lose his business because of a simple corporate fallout. He has been selling classified aerospace logistics to an unregistered overseas buyer for three years to keep his firm afloat. And when you cut him off, he realized the only leverage he had left to save himself from federal prison... was you."

Before the horror of the revelation could fully sink into my mind, the base sirens at FOB Falcon began to wail—a shrill, undulating scream that signaled an immediate, catastrophic threat.

The overhead lights in the operations bunker flashed from white to combat red.

The chief tactical officer at the radar console leapt to his feet, his headset clattering against his desk. "General! We have multiple inbound radar signatures emerging from dead airspace across the Syrian border! High-altitude, hypersonic... they aren't Russian, and they aren't Chinese!"

The tactical screen updated with violent speed. Three unknown aircraft, matching the exact aerodynamic profile of the *RQ-70 Valkyrie*, were descending toward our base at Mach 6.

"Captain Hayes," Colonel Sterling’s holographic image yelled through the crackling static of a collapsing communications link. "Your father didn't just sell the blueprints... he delivered a working prototype to the black market two years ago! Scramble Valkyrie One! Scramble—"

The satellite link abruptly severed into snow, and the concrete walls of the underground bunker shuddered violently as the first hypersonic shockwave cracked across the sky directly above our heads.
