Chapter 4 - The Discovery

While the surgical team fought for our lives behind the hermetically sealed doors of Operating Room 3, Mark paced the waiting room floor like a caged predator. His hands were coated in dried blood, his shirt torn, but he refused every offer of a washcloth or water.
Half an hour later, the waiting room doors swung open, admitting Richard, Evelyn, and Chloe. They walked in as if inspecting a mediocre hotel. Evelyn had even taken the time to refresh her makeup, though her eyes were darting nervously around the room.
“Mark,” Richard said, his tone commanding, attempting to re-establish his patriarchal authority. “How is she? We came to ensure Sarah doesn't say anything foolish to the police. This was clearly an unfortunate domestic accident. You understand that, of course.”
Mark turned on his heel. The look in his eyes was so savage that Richard took two steps backward, bumping into Chloe, who let out an exaggerated whimper about her surgical stitches.
“If you speak Sarah’s name again, Richard, I will tear your throat out right here in front of these cameras,” Mark said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating with suppressed violence. “You pushed her. You tried to kill our child.”
“Don’t you dare accuse my husband of a crime!” Evelyn hissed, stepping up to defend him. “Sarah has always been clumsy! She tripped! And besides, we have rights here. We are her family. You are just an in-law.”
Before Mark could respond, the OR doors hissed open.
Dr. Vance emerged, still wearing her blood-splattered surgical gown, her face pale and exhausted. Her surgical cap was damp with sweat. Behind her walked two uniformed police officers and a man wearing a crisp dark suit—the hospital’s chief legal counsel.
Mark rushed toward her, ignoring my parents entirely. “Doctor! Please… tell me.”
Dr. Vance pulled off her mask. She looked directly into Mark’s eyes, a faint, weary smile softening her features. “Your wife is alive, Mr. Davis. She lost four units of blood, but we managed to repair the arterial tear and stabilize her uterus. And against all medical probability… you have a son and a daughter. They are in the neonatal intensive care unit. They are tiny, but they are breathing on their own.”
Mark dropped to his knees right there in the corridor, burying his face in his hands as heavy, wracking sobs broke from his chest.
“Twins?” Evelyn shrieked, her voice shrill with indignation rather than joy. “She was hiding twins from us? What kind of ungrateful daughter keeps that a secret?”
Dr. Vance’s expression instantly turned to pure granite. She turned her attention to Evelyn and Richard, her eyes narrowing with professional contempt.
“Mrs. Sterling, your daughter was not hiding anything. The second fetus was concealed anatomically behind an abnormal uterine septum,” Dr. Vance said, her voice carrying across the entire waiting room. “However, during our emergency exploratory laparotomy and the subsequent trauma workup, we discovered several things that require immediate legal and medical intervention.”
Richard stiffened. “What are you talking about? Medical details are confidential to her immediate family.”
“Her husband is her immediate family, Mr. Sterling,” Dr. Vance retorted sharply. “And what we discovered doesn't just concern Sarah’s health. It concerns a direct match with a nationwide donor registry flagged under an active felony medical fraud investigation.”
